I have recently decided to change my ISP (internet service provider) and after a lot of thought went with Sky Broadband, happy to say the set up was painless and everything went great, it all happened within the time frame Sky had said it would and I was very impressed. This is when I discovered the advantage to reading the small print, I am only allowed to use their supplied wireless router, Sky have locked you out and hidden the user name and password so you can't use your own equipment.
I was not sure if this was legal as it smacks of unfair control which in my opinion should not be allowed and Sky appears to be the only ISP doing this. I would imagine for the ease of set up for those without router experience it's a great idea, for me however I have been reduced to a 54mbps router when I had a N type router capable of 300mbps, which in effect would become obsolete.
Sky will not supply the account user name and password at all, if you ring them they say the contract states you can only use the sky router. If they had given me the opportunity to purchase a mimo type n router which was locked I would be happy, but I did not have that choice.
I hope any of your readers thinking of using Sky Broadband will now be aware of this issue as they can save the time I will be spending canceling this ISP and looking for another that will be happy for me to use my own router.

| Welcome to the Forums. Unfortunately Sky are within their rights to do this. Fortunately there is a way around it. Have a look here http://www.philipnicosia.com/2006/10/03/sky-broadband-username-and-password/
