@Jason, have reinstalled seperate chipset drivers, though not a complete wipe and reinstall, though now looks like that is required. Thinking back over what happened, am now sure it is the Pinnacle TV cards I use which caused all the problems, as the reinstall originally was caused when I fitted a dual freeview card from that company. after I removed the analogue card yesterday, then tried to uninstall the software....that's when the DVD writer was no longer recognised. The supplied software from Pinnacle embeds itself so deep into the registry, and shares DLL library files that when you try to remove them, you get loads of "shared files, are you sure you want to remove", option. this went on & on so I cancelled the warnings and removed the lot.

Obviously now it was not a wise move, but got fed up with the messages, and seems a bit like the tales of removing Norton....

Oh and being told to disable it was silly too, its part of the chipset, it might not seem like it effects your system but believe me later on you will get error messages and perhaps blue screens.

Accept it must apply to something, but will just have to wait and see. At the mo, have installed my 4850, which went according to plan with no hitches, so going to leave well alone meantime. If it starts to cause crashes etc, will do a delete/remake partition and reinstall....

The Pinnacle card can stay out, and it's software can stay on....

You are correct that there isn't an entry in the BIOS for AMD Live, which surprised me! However that tells me that you could try installing the drivers for it to see if the offending error disappears. I think it is definately worth a try just to shut me up at least about AMD Live being the problem
Thats the last you'll hear from me on the subject anyway.

May the force be with you.

Compaq - the "unknown device" isn't working as it has no driver, therefore it cannot be anything vital or Shuggie would know.
So disabling it will not stop it working because it isn't anyway!

I've seen this loads of times and rarely get to the bottom of it.
Disbaling it at least shuts Windows up

You're correct Dave, only difference is I have a red cross now, but at least Windows doesn't keep trying to install it, and failing. Some type of "Will o' the wisp" thing, but have this happened at least once before with another system, and seems the only way to shift it is a reinstall, which is just not worth it, at the mo.....

Try double clicking it and update / install driver, then let Windows look online for an update. The best part of this is, it only takes a minute or so to complete

rather than re-check the posts, i have read them honest, is it actually showing it in device manager? if so, rather than updating the driver, would it help to uninstall it completely and allow windows to re-install? i would certainly wait for someone else, more of an expert to comment on this option before doing it but it could be an option.
