It should only be 'popping up' when the mouse cursor is near the digital clock display which it is an expansion of.
Right-click on that clock and select Properties if you want to suppress it altogether.
Control Panel (Classic View) Date and Time to adjust the clock and its time zone etc.
Control Panel (Classic View) Regional and Language Options to Customize its format etc (eg Date format of dddd dd MMMM yyyy will pop up 'Friday 03 October 2008' for today), but I guess that you could try something different, even all blank and see what happens, otherwise stop hovering the mouse cursor in that area of the screen ?

cheers bruce.

i will try the properties box but it isn't when i hover it over.  that may be what is triggering it, i am not sure, but it doesn't go.  as soon as it comes up, it stays until the laptop is truned off.

Sorry, hadn't appreciateed that it was Vista on a laptop, which could have quirks that are actually 'unsupported'. In my limited experience of laptops, only Lenova, as part of their IBM inheritance, actually keep track of, or offer any form of download support on such issues, so you may just have to live with your particular laptop quirk.
