Hi folks,

I'm posting on behalf of my boss for this one....

Last week, he let Automatic Update run, installing SP3 for Windows XP.

At the same time, his Norton AV updated itself.

Since then, whenever he tries to copy a file in Windows Explorer, it hangs, casuing himto have to do a Ctrl+Alt+Del then kill process through task manager.

He generally uses Powerdesk, but was unable to copy files in it either, so reverted to using windows explorer.

Any suggestions how to resolve this? He does not have System Restore enabled.

Many Thanks in advance,
Geebus

Yes. Get rid of Norton, it causes an immense number of problems. Symantec are great marketeers . . . .

Would use free, lightweight, standalone security software, or a less invasive and vilified suite. idk what it has to do with the actual problem though. Can always eliminate and test.

Blanket fixes, assuming something is actually borked in windows system files - running sfc /scannow from the Run... dialog (search for details on this), removal/reinstall of SP3, 'repair' install if he has the full OS setup CD.

Or, do a full uninstall of Norton. You need to do a web search on that, and then because some people don't like to use free AV, purchase ESET's Nod32. It is far more effective than Norton, and is both fast and lightweight.

[EDIT] Borking the copying of files points the finger firmly at the AntiVirus software. Norton of course blames Microsoft for the many reports of Norton/SP3 incompatibilities. If your boss is stupid enough to want to keep Norton then read this first. Having had bitter experience of Norton in the past, their fix probably won't work.

If it still doesn't work and he still wants to follow the Norton path to OS hell then he needs to to do a full system restore to pre-SP3. follow the Norton advice (pray it works, as it probably won't) then do his SP3 upgrade again.

I don't remember if it is included, but it certainly is available separately here. I see no good reason why you shouldn't install it anyway.

Note if you are upgrading to SP3 its worth checking Microsoft's Release notes here first
