Hi Chaps,

I currently run Avira free AV, but am able to get Sophos, for free, from the Uni I work at (they paid for many licences, and as I access the system from home sometimes, can have it for nowt!).

Now, I know Avira, AVG, and a few others, but I don't really know Sophos. Would you recommend using this paid for AV (well, not paid for by me) over a free one, or stick with what you know?

Thanks in advance for any and all advice...

By the looks of it, Avira is better.

The only thing is, that's the premium version of Avira, and I have the free version... Anyone know what the differences are? I am aware there are more features in a premium version, but with regard to scanning and detecting the plethora varieties of malware etc, is there a difference?

Good point. That shows the differences between them. Not sure what you would find useful. Personally, the only options that I would see as useful would be the:

AntiSpyware protection from spyware and adware
WebGuard protection from malicious websites
AntiDrive-by stops malware downloads while surfing

Antispyware is taken care of by Windows Defender
WebGuard is taken care of by Spyware Blaster
AntiDrive I don't understand what it does really. Not sure what an equivalent tool is.

I 'm not sure regards "AntiDrive-by stops malware downloads while surfing" , but Spyware Terminator and the program that came with Comodo Firewall's seem to do good for me! (Well they did before my laptop seized up!  )

I looked at http://www.comodo.com/products/free_products.html to see what the above was called and saw the Comodo Memory Firewall which says it fixes the drive-by bit!??

Anybody using that?

Always been happy with Avira (when the nags are disabled ), but i think this comes down a personal choice. If you have something your happy with, why risk changing for something that may not be so good.....?

Not entirely happy with Avira, just don't get on with it as well as I used to with AVG, but AVG buggered itself with version 8 :/

I'm thinking I'll give Sophos a try few a month or so and see how I get on, as I can always go back to the free Avira
