What do you mean by "DSL"?
I don't think it''s the meaning I know - Digital Subscriber Line (or cable internet as opposed to through the phone line).

Your question is a bit too open-ended to answer in the Forum. I'd recommend you get the book "The Official Damn Small Linux Book" by Shingledecker, Andrews & Negus ISBN-13 978-0-13-233869-1 and ISBN-10 0-13-233869-6. (I don't know why there are two ISBN numbers, I guess one is for the CD). You should be able to get it from your Uni Library. You will need to get to grips with MyDSL extensions to install Samba etc.
If you can't be bothered to rtfm then visit the dsl forum here. However they tend to be extremely rude to anyone who doesn't rtfm!

DSL usually has DHCP set by default, and just works.
Do you want to give it a fixed IP?
the config tool is ifconfig
e.g.
ifconfig
give sconnection data
ifconfig eth0 up
brings eth0 up
ifconfig eth1 down
would disable eth1
