Avast Free AV was reporting corrupted files during attempts to update; I removed it to have a fresh install. On rebooting after uninstalling, I got a message informing me that since my last activation I had changed the components on my PC[I have not] and I had 3 days to reactivate Windows.[ which it did with no problems] I have never had this before, did I in some way alter my Window registry and confuse the poor thing.

This is a combination of XP being crap, and Avast! being, well, crap too...
Remove it again, burn and salt it from the program files and registry, then install Avira and relax knowing you have an AV that actually catches virii, unlike Avast! which doesn't!

Avira is great, but I recommend Avast! to those that just want something that does sit in the background and doesn't give pop-ups. I also use Avast! on my Media Center where Aviras popups would not go down well in the middle of TV.
Simply download Avast! again, and when given the option repair it. The Windows Activation I don't understand, but reactivation isn't going to be difficult.

I did that and could not get Avira to update, so went back to Avast.

Took it off and did a clean install, fine now. I have used it for some time and never a peak out of it.
The Windows glitch? I have not got a clue.

Sorry but can't agree with this, Avast in my experience is a very good AV and has found many viruses
(Virii? Latin scholars object that this invented term does not follow standard patterns in that language, and that there is already a perfectly good plural in English: “viruses.” )
on PC's I have repaired over the years - I have used Avast personally for over 4 years and have never had a problem. It's only annoyance to me is it takes up system resources updating for a minute or two when you boot your PC - I can live with that

Virii? Latin scholars object . . .
If you 'wiki' the origins of 'virii' you will find that it was adopted as the plural of 'computer virus' with the sole purpose of making Latin Scholars object!
