I put Gparted and ntfs tools on (if they aren't already) in case of needing to deal with Windows drives.

ahhh
that might explain why when playing with all the other distros, i could not access any of the drives on either my laptop or main pc

was proper pulling my hair out !!!

so i need to get them from a repository ??

Hi Jody,

Can't see why you had a problem with Puppy. It should be ideal. And its damn easy to put on a pendrive.

First, download the latest ISO (that's 4.1) - http://tinyurl.com/4khhya
Second, download Unetbootin - http://tinyurl.com/3tgs4l

The just run Unetbootin and simply tell it which drive is your pendrive and where the downloaded Puppy iso is on your computer. (Leave the top boxes alone. They are if you want to download the ISO and install it on the pendrive all in one go. Trouble is Unetbootin has not yet been updated to the latest Puppy so its best to download 4.1 yourself as I suggest and then just point Unetbootin at it.)

That will sort it so you can then boot from the usb. Once Puppy is fully running just click on the "mount" icon at the top of the screen and mount whichever drives you want to. You can then access them from the blue file-cabinet icon on the same tab until you get used to using the Rox Filer.

Cheers,
vfm

Just bought an Intel atom mini-itx board.
Can only install a slimline IDE CDrom or a 2.5" IDE drive, not both-grr.
Now I need a way to install Ubuntu on the drive. Got pendrive linux working, so 4GB USB stick looks like the answer.
Or maybe I should just buy a sata 2.5 drive?

Is it physical space for just one drive, or lack of IDE connectors?

If it's just lack of IDE connectors and you already have a 2.5" IDE hard drive, just get a cheap 2.5" IDE USB enclosure, remove the PCB and connect the USB cable to an internal header.
Hey presto, 2.5" internal USB hard drive.

A SATA drive would be better though and they're astonishingly cheap these days.

Lack of IDE connectors. I have an IDE to mini-IDE connector for the DVDdrive, and an IDE converter for the laptop hdd drive, but I cannot connect both, as there is only one IDE socket on the MOBO.
I think that i will use the USB installation option.

Don't know if you're talking to me re Puppy. I suspect you may be. You have two options if you are.

Just export your Firefox bookmarks to an html file using the "Organize Bookmarks" option in firefox. You can then import them into SeaMonkey using the "Manage Bookmarks" option and the File>Open Bookmarks File option on that page.

The other option is to install Firefox in Puppy. Just use Puppy Package Manager and that lists Firefox 2.0.0.7. Just click on it and it will install. Takes only two minutes and is all automatic. But wait until it has also finished checking dependencies. Then simply reboot and it will appear in the Internet menu.

Try FaunOS at http://www.faunos.com/ I use this one and it is great. It gives you the option to save any changes when you shut down. Click on Yes and everything gets saved to the usb stick . click on No and the shutdown is very fast.
