Hi,

The 120 GB (Seagate) SATA HDD in rig 1 of my sig is showing signs of failing, or rather the NVIDIA RAID tool keeps telling me that there was a problem writing to it.  I did a checkdisk which came up with nothing and I am wondering what to believe.

That aside I would like to update the drive anyway so my question is, as it is not in a RAID formation, should I just be able to clone the drive.  The main fear I have about this is the fact that at one time I had a dual boot with Linux on this drive and at start up Grub is the boot loader.  Will I have to get rid of this prior to the clone?

Thanks!

You should have no problem cloning the drive even if it was in a raid setup. I would do this first in case the drive fails
Clone the drive first then boot XP cd to the recovery console and use fixmbr to get rid of the grub bootloader.
If you want to test this you can clone the drive then try to repair the old one once you have a copy to fall back on.
I have'nt used the Nvidia Raid Tool but I'm guessing its windows based. It may just be that it's looking for something that's not there so obviously it cant write to the array

Cheers Chris

Don't know how I missed this but it seems that the drive in question is part of a JBOD setup and it is the system drive.  I was sure that when I set it up I selected that one to be on it's own.

Knowing this, does that change your opinion on what I should do?

Did you not notice the single drive was missing
Any way it shouldn't make any difference as the system will see just one drive. I've dont it loads of times on a raid 0 setup without problem.
The only downside I can see is that if all the drives are in the array with no partitions you will have to image the whole lot onto the new drive.
If you have a partition for the OS just do partition to partition with resizing (to expand the partition to full capacity) or create one the same size for the OS and a second for the data.(even with your other drives)
Of course a backup of all important data is probably a good idea before you start

Cheers Chris

Yes, I agree (backup backup backup), I've fallen foul of data loss before.  I shall wait until I get a new large HDD and take small steps to sorting it out.

Thanks for the feedback guys, as usual Micromart is the most helpful forum on the WWW.
