Microsoft did actually withdraw some of that gusto of MinWin. Most likely just to cover themselves and make sure they don't dissapoint. You are most likely correct, but hey, it's something new to play with for a bit.

Fair does. I guess we're getting our news from different sources as I've only found one claim to the contrary so far. Unless the release date has changed (again) since I last looked, M$ are still giving themselves until at least late next year to finalise the release and a great deal may (or may not) happen between now and then.

Cheers, Slipstreem.

System specs: "Phoenix" - Intel C2D E4500 overclocked to 3GHz with ACF7Pro HSF on Volt-modded ASRock 775Dual-VSTA mobo (modded BIOS rev 3.10A and VNB=1.65, Vagp=1.8), 2x1GB Crucial Ballistix DDR2-800 RAM (3.0,3,3,8,1T @546MHz), Sapphire ATI HD3870 512MB GDDR4 PCIe graphics card overclocked to 850MHz GPU & 2.4GHz RAM running Omega drivers. Powered by Hiper Type-M 580W PSU. Guess who likes overclocking on a budget.

MP3 Encoding for Audiophiles
Fun MPEG-4 Encoding Race
MPEG-4 Playback Enhancement Using FFDShow
How good is the Arctic Cooling Freezer 7 Pro HSF really?
Boosting ATI Framerates with CCC (X700 on)
Optimise ATI Image Quality and Framerates with Omega & ATT under WinXP (X1xxx and HD38xx Series)

News stories go each way, even if they read from the same scrap of paper. We have to wait and see. Beta 1 is early 2009 I believe though.

Release date is either late 2009 or Vista release date + 3 years, though Microsoft are saying they won't release untill a Quality bar has been reached.

At the moment it's mostly just rumour and speculation, with little tit-bits released to the press and hard / software developers to whet peoples appetites.

After all they gave away the demo disks at the developers conference, and within 48 hours thay turn up on torrent sites, and so far M$ haven't uttered a word of complaint about piracy. Brilliant free marketing ploy.

TBH I'll give this a miss for now, and wait for the final release, whenever that may be. Surely you all remember the debacle about the Vista Alpha, Beta and RTM1 releases and what complete dogs they were, and in no way reflected the finished release.
If anything, they put people off Vista and led to a lot of the continuing apathy towards it.

No way am I going to act as an unpaid Beta tester for M$ again.
