The ethernet adapter on the motherboard has suddenly  disappeared, I am running Windows Vista 64 bit OS, the adapter is not visible in device manager, I have tried reinstalling the device and drivers but get a 'error 31' using either the original or latest driver from ASUSTEK even tried disabling then re enabling the adapter in the BIOS without any success. It has worked previously but I am not sure of when it went off the system I need it to access my Linksys WRT54 router as you can't  use a wireless  browser to get into the configuration screens which I need to look at as I have just bought a DELL V305W wireless printer and can't get it to install. Bit of a nightmare but I am hoping by sorting the ethernet issue I can bottom out the other problems.

Don't know abut Vista, but had a small glitch with XP Pro with the same mobo.
Had to disable the ethernet port in device manager and reboot.
It worked straight away after that.

And welcome to the forum.

Disabling the adapter makes it appear in the network connections but if you enable it ,it then disappears, device manager shows the adapter whether enabled or disabled. In enabled state it still gives error 31  saying there is a problem with the driver  but if I check it then it says it's current and ok. Getting a bit frustrated as I am going round in circles

A quick search threw up lots of posts about this, most concerning DUN. A lot of people are having this problem after uninstalling comms software from AT&T or software for their phones. A few posts point to a program called RAREPAIR.exe, which repairs the RAS code and is quite old now, but I didn't see any "it worked!" posts afterwards. Most are using Vista 64.

It may be a hardware fault though so try booting with a Linux live cd and check that. This may at least give you access to the router to make the changes you need to do.
You could always connect the laptop with the network cable to the router to make the changes too

Cheers Chris

You have probably been through what I'm about to tell you, but it's worth a shot.

Microsoft have troubleshooting for this in XP but I'm sure that it is relevant to Vista.

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/825826#Method1

Especially check that the services required for network connectivity are started (they may have been unintentionally stopped).

Hope this helps!

Still no success, I can see the adapter but the following message is seen regarding the driver

This device is not working properly because Windows cannot load the drivers required for this device. (Code 31)

If I try to update the driver it says  basically the samething ,it can find  adriver but there is a problem when it tries to install it, however if I disable the adapter, then update the driver it says the driver is the best and up todate driver?

So it appears the adapter is ok so a driver issue, but if I install the original driver off the motherboard disc it still gives the error message, so i'm off to swear and kick things in a corner
