Hi Folks..

I have an ASUS P4S800 motherboard and wish to max it out with as much memory as I can.  In the manual, it states the following:

3 x DIMM, Max. 3 GB, DDR SDRAM ,Non-ECC, Memory
(PC2100/PC1600 up to 3 DIMMs; PC3200/PC2700 up to 2 DIMMs; 1GB PC3200/2700 with 32 DDR chips up to 1 DIMM only)

Could someone decipher what exactly the above statement means!!

Does it mean the following:

To get 3GB I need to use PC2100/PC1600 memory.  If I use PC3200/PC2700 memory, I'll only get a max of 2Gb and if I use PC3200/2700 with 32 DDR chips (whatever that is) I will only be able to get 1GB

On a slighly different tangent, I have 2 other MOBO's (IC7 and IC7-MAX3) that I wish to max out and can take PC3200 or PC2700 memory.  Which is better? PC3200 or PC2700??

Help greatly appreciated..

Well PC3200 or DDR400 is better than PC2100 ( DDR266 ) or PC2700 (DDR333)

To cut a long story short, if you are running XP then 2gb is more than enough. 32 chips relate to the number of physical chips on the individual memory boards.

Hope this helps............... The manual does not. It lists no vendor recommended memory greater than a 512mb Dimm. Which gives you 1.5gb.

By all accounts it does support higher but I can understand why you think its a bit vague.

The IC7 by all accounts supports 4GB of DDR. Whether you would want to invest money in DDR is another matter.

An upgrade should be considered as an alternative. Might be better with a cheap modern board.

Hi..

I've done a check with crucial memory and it seems that their 1GB memory is compatible with a number of my motherboards.  I've 4 (PS4800, 648FXA2, IC7-MAX3 and an IC7)

Most run XP at the moment but I have one running VISTA.  Can get 1GB memory for around £19 each.

I'm not too interested in swapping to a new motherboard/processor just yet.
