| Hi Have just finished assembling my new machine, nothing too fancy: Nvidia 650i ultra motherboard E8200 processor, as yet not over-clocked 4GB patriot PC2-6400 memory Geforce 7200GS graphics, (I know, but I only do video editing.) Pioneer DVR 215D sata Samsung 160 GB sata hard drive
I have yet to move my two data drives from my old rig, but I want to get this lot up and stable before I start editing on it. Here is my problem, I loaded Windows XP pro and all the updates, all OK. Zone alarm, AVG and most of my favourite applications still OK, but when I went to load some drivers for my video card, (Pinnacle DC10+), the system would not read from my CD. In fact I could not read ANY CD or DVD! I have tried everything, I have changed sata leads, tried another IDE DVD recorder, tried a IDE CD player and a CD recorder – nothing. They all appear in ‘My Computer’ as say a ‘DVD player’, but as soon as you put in say, a music CD or a DVD, the icon reverts to ‘CD’ and if you try to open the disc, it is blank. I have tried going into Device Manager, but it says all is OK. I have tried re-installing the drivers and SOMETIMES this kicks them into action but only for the one time. I have also had limited success by going to ‘Open With’ and selecting a program, so it CAN work but doesn’t seem to want to without a lot of hassle!! Please help Thanks dick

Hi, welcome to the trials and tribulations of self-build and Forum advice.
Although your problem could be as trivial as a poor quality lead to the optical drive, it sounds like the new drive firmware can't recognise the media that you are using. You could quickly check this by using a factory pressed audioCD or DVD whose 'contrast' and format are also likely to be a better bet for such testing. Getting into deeper diagnosis of optical drive and media embedded codes, a copy of Nero Infotool can be a great help. Part of the Nero suite, version5 is still available as a free, stand-alone, about 2MiB download from http://www.nero.com/enu/support-nero8-tools-utilities.html
Edit PS - Mind you, it could simply be a drive letter assignment conflict, which you can investigate via start, right-click on My Computer, Manage, Disk Management plus start, right-click, Explore

I've had CD/DVD drives "go on strike" before (usually sata), uninstalling in device manager and then rebooting usually works. My next port of call would be the BIOS, in case there's a setting that needs changing (plug and play devices setting perhaps). Other than that I am at a loss, although it seems unlikely to be a motherboard hardware issue as both IDE and sata are affected.

| Hi Thanks for the help everyone BUT I have now tried uninstalling in the device manager and checking the BIOS. The BIOS sees all the devices and there is no drive letter clash but still no working CD/DVD drives. I am still confused as to why the drives worked for a couple of days installing all my software, (not to mention Windows XP,) then suddenly refused to even 'see' a DVD or CD (even real shop bought ones, not home burnt.) Just to repeat in 'My Computer' the drives appear as: DVD-RW Drive (E and CD-RW Drive (F . As soon as you place any media in the drive the wording changes to CD Drive (E or CD Drive (F . If you then double click on the drive it opens a BLANK window? It certainly does not play! I thought it might be a software clash, but I have used all the software quite happily together on my old PC? HELP PLEASE... thanks dick

Sorry about the smileys on my previous posting - they were written as 'colon, close brackets'. A bit of over-keen software?

| Hi - It's me again. Have just run NERO InfoTool with a retail DVD and Music CD in each of the drives. Nero found the drives reported all OK and even recognised the title of the DVD so it seems that the hardware is functioning OK. (It did find that my Country was set to USA, but changing that to UK made no difference.) Is it a software clash? Nero says I have: Roxio Easy CD & DVD Creator 6 Winamp 5.541 DivX player 2.5.5 Pinnacle Studio 9 v9.5 VLC Media Player 0.9.6 Quicktime 6.5.1 Audio grabber 1.83 Canopus DV File Converter (I think that's all the audio and video files it lists, not everything.)
Any suggestions please for getting these drives to work... Thanks dick

Hi, check your "Program access and defaults" from start button and see what's what, as you seem to have a lot of software to basically do the same job. Have found out from experience with Pinnacle software, that it also hogs the scene with "showtime", it's own DVD player. Where you have said all the software worked together before on another system, you could have installed it in a different order, or it doesn't mean it will all work on any system. i have a Pinnacle freeview card which wiped out WinXP in sig1, but worked fine in sig2......

| Hi thanks shuggie, couldn't find "Program access and defaults" from start button, but I have had clashes before on my old Win98 machine. That was between Roxio Easy CD Creator and CyberLinks PowerDVD. As you say, it was all down to the order in which they were loaded. Anyway as a 'Rollback' to a clean install didn't solve the problem, I am about to do a fresh install of Windows XP Pro... wish me luck cheers dick
