ive figured it out that the latest updates for vista somehow makes my pc restart but at random times, could be 1/2 hr or even 2hrs.
i dont get any warnings at all, everything quits and restarts.

i found out its the updates after i updated ATI drivers, cleaned my pc (dust free) temps. are ok aswell.
I rolled back a system restore to a month ago and my pc was fine for a few days, then i accepted some updates (not thinking at the time) and it since keeps quitting again.

Anyone else having the same problems or heard of it?

anyone know of a potential cure for the problem?

A couple of things spring to mind.
a) You have wake-on-LAN set in your bios and your network is waking up your pc.
b) Your pc isn't actually shutdown, it is in hibernation, and something you do is waking it up.
c) A faulty psu+b)
d) It has been reported that extremely overclocked CPU's can also reactivate a pc in hibernation.

EDIT just reread your post - do you mean your PC does a random shutdown THEN restarts? If so I'd suspect overheating and/or too much overclocking.

I know how you are suffering, as that problem has happened to me on more than one occassion, it even brought down my Dell Inspiron 1520 laptop, so i had to re-format the HDD then re-install Vista plus all the drivers & other software etc, so what i have done is go in stop the automatic updates, then it only warns me of any new updates, i will only say yes to a update if i am now fully sure it will benifit the laptop, if not i won't use that update.

As it is very upsetting when you are rather busy carring out a task & then Update kicks you out of that, or as you have had the laptop or PC turns it self off & then maybe back on, or the laptop or PC wants to just get on with updates instead of waiting to see what the user wants to do!!!  So my suggestion is stop automatic updates.

If the PC shutsdown during games or during intensive use i would suspect the PSU, If it was a result of a conflict error i would expect a BSOD unless you have software that would automatically reboot after a BSOD.(System mechanic does this).

nope, no bsod..as i said, i dont get any report of what happened.
As for overclocking, ive had my pc on default setting for the past 2 months, so processor and graphic card arnt overclocked.

Its restarted during internet browsing, running defrag, watching a dvd and also just been left alone.

Intersting about the comment about lan waking up / shutting down ummmm...

BUT.... i decided on Sunday to re-install Vista (thought it was for the best)

took from 12.30pm to 9pm to get it all up n running and so far no crashes, even with Vista being upto date. so im more confused now lol

by the way, nifty little program called drivermax out there. I backed up all my drivers and then imported them once i reinstalled the program. It also as the ability to download and install the latest drivers now which is great..and its all free!!!! its saved me a few more hrs online looking for them and installing them seperatly
