As its an ata drive (I am presuming pata rather than sata) try it on its own in the pc. Wrong jumper settings may cause problems if it's on the same ide cable.Set it to master and use a boot cd/floppy and see if you can access the drive. Check in the bios and see if it's seen there.
If that works there are further steps you can take to recover the data
Edit : When you say it doesn't boot up do you mean to windows or it does not power on?

I just tried putting it as slave and it recognised the drive, but wouldn't continue to windows, just the same as before..

Is there any way of getting the PC to boot-up with the HDD plugged into the Slave and using my original SATA HDD to boot Windows up..?

I think whats happening is that windows is getting confused when the ide is attached. My old AMD64 system could not see both sata and ide drives at boot, but was ok once XP had loaded. I used this "feature" to create two independent installs without the normall dual boot screen.
First check the jumper positions on the drive for master or single drive. There may not be enough jumpers on the drive so you have to use some from another drive if you can. If you have a CD/DVD drive disconnect it entirely so the only thing on that channell is the ide drive.
Then check in your bios to make sure that the sata drive is selected as the hard drive to boot from. It's usually listed in a different menu to the boot order and can cause the problem you have if not set correctly.
If that works you can either copy all the files from the drive to yours and backup to DVD later or buy a new external caddy to house the drive
