Hi there

I have a wee issue that is probably easy to solve for someone out there, I had to fit a new sata hard drive to my acer desktop computer last week, I fitted a seagate 80GB drive.

This issue I have is, after installation and reinstalling the XP software, the drives letters have jumped. The new drive is now reading as H drive and rgw cdrom drive is read as G (is drive is a ide) and I have other card readers reading ,C, D, E, F.

Some cdroms are not being read properly now, is there a reason why the letters have jumped and how do I sort the problem.

Thanks for any help

John

I'm afraid it's a feature / quirk / bug with XP

You're by no means the first, and won't be the last, to get caught out by it.

Unfortunately if you leave a USB multi-card reader in whilst installing XP it assigns the drive letters to these first, and the next available letter - usually H: - to the HDD.

It isn't possible to re-assign the HDD back to C: from within XP, the best and most stable way to do it is to unplug the card reader, reinstall XP again and then re-plug the card reader.

You will need to reinstall Windows again, this time disconnecting the card reader first.
