Hi Guys this just popped into my head so here goes.

I have a random stick of "Value" Patriot ram bashing from another system. My 2gb of OCZ ram currently runs in Dual Channel mode which i understand to be much better then Single.

When i put this Extra 1gb stick of ram in my system the Other 2gb of OCZ ram no longer ran in dual channel mode. and on top of that my system became unstable.

So really my question is, Can 2 sticks of ram run in dual channel mode, whilst one doesnt. and if so How??

Thanks Dingo

Big Shout out to Grians bios repair. The guy managed to reprogram the bios from a
bad flash on my motherboard for only £16.50!!! Happy days.

Not necessarily. Some software runs faster in Single Channel mode, although the majority seems to favour Dual Channel. There is seldom much more than a 10% difference either way in reality. Try benchmarking a few of your favourite apps/games using 2GB in Dual Channel versus 3GB in Single Channel. You may not lose as much performance as you think. On the other hand, you may.

When i put this Extra 1gb stick of ram in my system the Other 2gb of OCZ ram no longer ran in dual channel mode. and on top of that my system became unstable.

Both channels have to be occupied by the same total amount of RAM for Dual Channel to work at all. Unbalancing the amounts in the channels will always cause Dual Channel to fail (AFAIK).

So really my question is, Can 2 sticks of ram run in dual channel mode, whilst one doesnt. and if so How??

If you're asking if your original 2GB can still run in Dual Channel with the extra 1GB in Single Channel, no. It has to be one or the other.

Cheers, Slipstreem.

Hi SlipStream,

You managed to answer ever question there nicely thanks. In Reality my system is only really heavily used for gaming. With a New Replacemnt gfx on its way im just pondering on how to really get the most out of my system.

Is there any programs you would recommend for benchmarking in game, The only game i've played recently which had an in game benching program was " World in Conflict " and that brought my HD3870 to its knee's :'(.

Thanks Again

Dingo

Some motherboards will allow you to run single channel and dual channel simultaneously, e.g. the Asus P5Q - see excerpt from the user manual below. I realise this isn't quite what you wanted to know, but here you are anyway.

"You may install varying memory sizes in Channel A and Channel B. The
system maps the total size of the lower-sized channel for the dual-channel
configuration. Any excess memory from the higher-sized channel is then
mapped for single-channel operation."

Rig A (gaming): Conroe E6600 RigB (media):Athlon 64 3000+ Rig C (laptop) Core Duo 2080 Rig D (server) Atom 230
