Thanks

If getting a fax like noise and your not plugged into the first(master) BT socket from the outside line, try plugging in your computer to that one. If things improve then it means the extension socket cabling is not up to spec.

There are instructions for doing a quiet line test here  http://tinyurl.com/2jfglc

Should tell you if the noise is on your line in or internal. I had a similar problem (extension wiring was a mess), replaced it with Cat5 and a faceplate filter and no more dropped connections.

Just bought a filtered faceplate XTE-2005 from ADSL Nation, only took a few minutes to fit, but you do need an IDC tool if you have extension sockets to connect the two wires to the connectors on the backplate.
I was doubtful about it, but I have to say I'm impressed, very impress with it.
Connection use to be a consistent 2.5mb, after fitting faceplate now at 3.7mb.

Some of the quiet line test is now resticted, and requires password to use.

Fully agree with Nightlight - I had so much noise on my phone line that it was nearly unusable. After many (useless) calls to BT my case was finally escalated to a 'real' Engineer, who diagnosed the problem and fixed it in two minutes. He said cheap ADSL filters cause him more work than anything else, he recommended the same type of solution as that used by Nightlight (preferably surge protected for your hub/pc) , but said if you must use an ordinary ADSL filter make sure it is of the dongle type as they tend to be better made.

EDIT - you may need to change all the filters in your house, as we had to go that route to cure all the noise producers. (Incidentally, some of the problem ones were originally from BT -- doh!)

Not with a XTE2005, the connections on rear of faceplate are white terminals for voice only as the ADSL signal has been filtered out, and blue terminals for extending the unfiltered ADSL signal to enable additonal sockets. Basically two totallay seperate circuits.

Had no end of problems using dongle filters, some good, some bad, using the face plate totally solved the problem.

Don't know how old your exterior line, but if it's been there a few years then it might be worth getting BT to check it.
I had simalar problems last year, turned out to to be corroded juction box on the bt pole across the road.

I guess I was lucky, it was not a line problem as installation of more expensive ADSL filters cleared all our issues. Silent line test is 'silent' now, and ADSL runs at 6-8mbps. Apologies for not checking how your face plate works - any issues in doing the installation that we should be aware of?

As the XTE faceplate is fitted to BT master socket, it has done away with all the other dongle filters I had on the other extensions, plus it has the advantage of me being able to run a seperate dedcaited adsl sockets to another room, if I decide to move my computer room.

Just make sure when you punch in the wires to IDC connection they are fully home,it helps to have the proper Krone IDC tool (see this link http://www.kenable.co.uk/product_info.php?referer=froogle&products_id=386) cost me £3.80p, better than the cheap plastic one if you have lot of extension to to do.
Plastic ones don't last that long
