Not sure if this is the right place for this question, but here goes

i have recorded something on the sky hdd and i was wondering if i would be able to connect it up to a pc and make a dvd of it? its a capital of culture program ( so no issues with recording rights etc,me thinks) my son was on the program and none of his classmates have seen it or the teachers? would like to put it on disc and let them see it as 22 kids and 9 teachers in my living room aint gonna happen!

thanks for any advice

ps to lazy to pull it out as the thing is built into wall with stereo etc and cables plastered over

john

Unless someone knows better I think you are out of luck. Two thoughts - is it on IPlayer or Channel4, if so that offers you a better route of possibly making a copy. Failing that, write a pleading letter to the programme director and ask if it would be possible to purchase a copy. This worked for us.

Hello - you could connect up the sky hd to a PC TV capture card and record that way. I would recommend a decent capture card, I use the Hauppauge HVR-1300 which is regularly on special offer at scan.co.uk and includes suitable software (there's also many free software alternatives). You would connect one of the Sky HD SCART outputs to the PC card via a suitable cable, using the stereo (phono) audio inputs and the composite or s-video input on the TV card. Expect to pay £40 - £50 for that card although other capture cards start at about a tenner. The cheaper cards (some are just usb adapter cables) rely on PC power for capture/conversion, whereas better ones have on-board hardware encoders for more consistent results.

Having said all of that, for the cost of DVD recorders these days that would be the easiest and just about a zero learning curve. Again, use the scart out from the Sky HD box to a suitable input on the DVD recorder. Most DVD recorders have set recording modes (1 hour, 2 hour, 4 hour per disk etc). Expect to pay £50 upwards. I've got this one and it works very well with sky HD:

You can pay a bit more for models with a built in hdd, but no need for your purposes. If its a one-off maybe you could borrow one, but they are also very useful longer term when you run out of space on your sky box!

BTW there is no way of getting the recordings off the hard disk direct (i.e. putting the sky hd in a caddy).

I confess I was carried away by the cabling being buried in the wall, and did not think out of the box! However, if you have the 'Sky Eye & remote pack' , and get a relatively clean composite signal, it is possible you may be able to play-back your Sky HD recording and use a remote location composite TV -in signal elsewhere in your house with one of the PC card solutions given earlier. I found to my surprise that it worked for me, but it may depend on how you have wired in the composite signal on your Sky box. Worth a try, rather than replastering the wall!

Ed - I now have a mental picture of a sky box growing out of a freshly plastered wall!

On the magic eye you mean the RF signal rather than composite? I to have been surprised how reasonable this can look. I used it as a "temporary" means of connecting a multiroom sky plus box to a kitchen LCD, but the picture was so decent it has become permanent.

That said recording via SCART is still the best option, and I think there must be at least the width of a SCART connector between the Sky box and the wall - if not I'll buy the plasterer a pint!

Another option (to aviod disturbing cabling) would be to use the SCART out from the TV, which may be free given that the Sky is using HDMI or component. Most TVs have at least one bi-directional SCART, which could be used to connect to a PC or DVD recorder.

This was why I thought everything was buried - I must admit I'm not a good enough plasterer to even contemplate the like, as sure as eggs it would go wrong and need ripping out of the wall!

Sorry I did of course mean RF out of the Sky box. As I didn't need it for the HDTV I think I plugged the house 'aerial lead' into the Sky box RF out in the hope it would distribute a signal around the house (which it actually does). Unfortunately it isn't an easy matter to check exactly how I wired it up - too much furniture to move. (sometimes I just I hate wires!).
