Perhaps you all could throw some light on a situation for me. Is it normal for a laptop fan to run constantly? I am inclined to say no as I've seen identical model laptop with a fan that only kicks in occasionally and as needed where as mine idles all the time and ramps up the speed as needed.

In trying to sort it out I removed the fan cover and unscrewed the HSF combo. The heatsink was full of dust and fluff and I noticed a distinct lack of thermal paste on the CPU. I cleaned out the heatsink and figuring that adding a blob of paste shouldn't be detrimental, added some cooling paste. When I put it all back together the fan runs constantly as before.

Any ideas as to what else I could do, or whether this is normal behaviour?

Many thanks

Nathan

EDIT: Just noticed I miss typed the title

On HP's this is usually a BIOS setting for fan on all the time.
Might be worth a look.

have you ever changed the laptops processor. if this is the case then the laptop m ay be thinking the processor is overheating, when it isnt. also, try the bios. the key to your problem may lie there.

I have had a good look through the bios and can't find anything related to fan control and it is the original processor (its soldered to the mobo).

has the hsf ever been replaced. also, if the laptop is a bit old and is running vista, this may be the root cause. also, look for management software on the internet for the laptop. you may be able to fix the prob through software.

What make/model is the laptop? I remember fixing a similar problem on a cheepo unbranded laptop a few years back, and the fan control was based on software within windows!

Also, can you see what temperature the cpu is running at in the bios, or using speedfan from windows? The heatsink may not be attached properly (it may be worth double checking even though you have only just had it apart). If the temperature reading is very high, that is probably the cause, or if the reading is erratic or non existant, the sensor may be faulting.

Another thought... Have you checked task manager within windows to make sure you dont have a process using 100% or a high usage of the cpu (apart from system idle processes)? this would cause your symptoms. If you do kill the process and see if that cures it.
