Just recently my mouse has started acting weird, if I scroll down using the wheel it will get so far and then jump to the bottom, if at any point (web page or word doc) I start to scroll up it will jump to the bottom of the page. I changed my mouse for one that works OK, but it still does the same thing, very weird.

I have just plugged in an old USB mouse and it works fine, so it must be the mouse socket on the motherboard , or do you know better

Thanks

If you have been unplugging/replugging your mouse then yes I'd suspect the socket. I once abused a keyboard socket and bent a pin by plugging in carelessly, and it did some totally weird tricks as a result.

Can you do a physical inspection? First shine a torch up the socket and see if you have bent a pin out of place. second look at the traces on the motherboard to see if anything has become displaced. Finally do the Bruce sniff test, maybe a condenser or other component is 'brewing'.

It could be the surface on which your mouse is on. Dark coloured surfaces are the worst but lighter ones work alot better or it could be that your mouse is starting to die.

If its a ball mouse ,rather than optical ,then twist off the cover, get the ball out and clean the 3 rollers.
The accumalation of dead skin, dust, hair, fluff, crumbs and coffee wont be doing a lot for accuracy.

Pleasant dreams.

Some optical mice react badly to sudden changes of contrast or reflectivity on a mouse mat or desktop.
My favourite mouse mat (one with a penguin in the middle ) was fine until I bought a HP mouse

Another issue is the "click" on a wheel mouse. some are just too sensitive, if you press alittle too hard, the go into autoscroll mode.
