Not sure if this is good news or bad, but Intel ( ) are now set to allow Linux-based notebooks to use Centrino branding for the first time. I think Linux can already run on existing Centrino notebooks, but until now Intel wouldn't permit companies to sell Linux laptops using the Centrino logo. How much will it all cost You can read more here.

while i have only used linux once, i am v. interested in the movement, as i see open-source as the way fwd. i am worried for linux, tho, as in a recent centrino (boo) advert (brainwash) i read the small print: "May run slower depending on spec... blah...blah..may run slower on linux... blah..." STOP... What did that just say?! (reverse) It seems a clear-cut case of microsoft and intel chummying up to each other, letting linux have as small a footold as possible. And dell are at it too. They at one point seemed to be heading to a point where they would at least consider using Linux and AMD chips, but now both these ideas are treated as blasphemy in their camp! What's the point? As a question, would most linux users say that they are AMD users too? and ATi GPU users too? Are linux users champion of the underdog? Do they all support Rotherham?

I read on another board that there were a few oddities in the Centrino which made it incompatible with Linux, until the latest Kernel updates dealt with this problem. So maybe you just couldn't have Centrino with Linux because it wouldn't work! I'm not saying Intel don't chum up with M$ let's face it, they both sell on image. AMD stuff knocks spots off Intel at any given price point, and it is only software/driver (non-)availability that holds back Linux.
My problem with Linux on Laptops is that most laptops, being complete systems, are sold with the Micro$oft Tax included. Surely the point is to get a laptop with NO OS. So you can add your own!
For the record, my Desktop is a Shuttle SN41G2V2 with 512Mb (2x256 matched) Geil Value RAM, Athlon XP2500+ clocked to XP3200+, Two Maxtor HDDs (120Gb + 80Gb), FX5200 graphics card, and NEC DVD+/- rewriter.
Oh, and Elan.Miller, see my contribution on PClinuxOS and try before you commit!

ASUS M2N32WS Pro — 2*1024Mb Corsair Value Select RAM — AM2 4200+ — XFX GeForce 7600GT Fatal1ty — 500Gb WD5000AAKS SATA Drive — PCLinuxOS
