Congratulations!

No spyware or antivirus will be needed, but you will need a firewall running (the one that comes with the system is fine, just make sure it is active).

Not entirely sure what you mean about updating software, but if you mean running a system update then yes, of course. Likewise if you want to manually download newer versions of the installed software this will be free as well.

Well done!

Glad you got your Winmodem working! I know it's nice when things work out of the box, but doesn't it feel good when something doesn't and you sort it out yourself? Does wonders for your confidence!

As far as the Firewall is concerned, to set it up in Mandrake (and PCLOS, they're identical in this respect) run the Mandrake (Master) Control Centre, Select the SECURITY tab, then FIREWALL. If your machine is just a standalone computer and its only connection is to the internel, just uncheck all boxes and press OK.

If you are serving other boxes from the computer, then you'll need a reply from someone who knows more than me.

As for virus protection, if your computer is standalone Linux I wouldn't bother. Again, if you are serving other computers, and some of them are Windows, then you can get a virus checker which will cut out viruses before you pass them to the Windows computer!

As for updating programs without paying, yes! I suggest you pop over to

and follow the instructions. To get the correct address for updates, just put in that you are using the official edition, rather than community.
