I have recently heard of a couple of new programs which are supposed
to make cracking WEP easier than a few months ago.

I personally have tried to crack mine using airsnort which failed
not because i couldnt do it but because my equipment is less than 3 years old and doesnt produce weak IVs.

These new programs are called aircrack and weplab i dont know if it
has been mentioned in micromart and i missed it. Anyway they make
use of all IVs in encrypted packets to determine the key.

Here is a link

http://www.securityfocus.com/infocus/1814

There is also a lot of talk about it on netstumbler.

The table in the link shows that compared to airsnort they work
very well and it seems that cracking WEP is again practically possible.

However seeing that he had results with airsnort i suspect he used
old equipment which still produces weak IVs. Although it suggests
that weak IVs are not so necessary I have read they are still very
important. I have only ever picked up one weak IV from my network
with me passing data back and forth for days generating much more
encrypted packets then is usually necessary for airsnort.

SO i would like to see an article about it and if its really true
that it is practically possible to crack WEP again. Someone actually
performing the crack on new equipment would be great.

I hope Simon doesn't mind me piping up but Micro Mart will be running a 4 part networking / wireless networking series soon that will include security issues.

Thanks for your post

Don't mind at all - we will be picking WEP vulnerability up as a seperate issue too though!
