Tiger is released at 6pm this evening, and it's looking great! I saw it at a preview showing yesterday, and fell in love with it straight away. It's significantly faster than Panther, and the Dashboard, Automater and Spotlight functions are incredible. This one's gonna be big...

It's a nice refinement of previous versions, but I can't say there's much that really excites me about it. Spotlight looks useful, but from what I've seen it doesn't allow more complex searches that 3rd party search tools are capable of. Dashboard is basically a copy of a 3rd party tool called Konfabulator (although the Apple version is faster).
Overall it seems like a worthwhile upgrade (for the speed improvements if nothing else), but I can't see it being bigger than any other OS X release. If 10.3 wasn't enough to tempt people to switch to Mac OS then I can't see 10.4 making much of a difference.

I agree Tiger is more likely to appeal to existing Mac users rather than convert newcomers, but this doesn't stop it being extremely impressive. Apple deserves a slap for stealing Konfabulator and repackaging it as Dashboard, but with the feature integrated into the OS, we can expect a much wider range of widgets now.
I'm not so sure about 3rd party tools offering the same power as Spotlight, though. Can I ask what tools you have in mind? Also, what do you think of Automater? It looks incredible in action, but is it one of those features that's great in theory, but no one bothers with in practice? I guess only time will tell...
