hi all,

ive got my g3 imac which is great, it came which some cd-r's with os 8.5 and osx on. It did have osx installed already but it was password protected so I started by erasing the disk and installing 8.5 on it. after I tried to install osx over it but I couldnt figure out how to do it. The long and short of it is I erased the disk again and installed osx on the system (pressing c as it starts up).

couple of questions from the back of that, I dont have anything like safari and itunes and stuff installed. also the mac cant start anything that requires classic mode, as I only have 8.5 on disk, I do have one that says os9 but that doesnt appear to have anything useful on it. How do I install a classic function?!

Also I tried downloading itunes from the apple website and it downloads ok but says it cannot verify the file.

Sorry about the long post but I would like to find out why it does these things rather than bodge my way through.

What version of OS X are you trying to use? It might be worth doing a clean install with a fresh copy of Tiger, as it seems your 'CD-Rs' aren't complete or contain a very old copy of the OS. For example, iTunes and Safari should install with the operating system if you have a recent version. If you have 10.2 or earlier, it's definitely worth splashing out on Tiger.

What model of G3 is it? Does it need a firmware update? See http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=86117 for more details.

thanks for the quick response, I believe that it should be osx panther, but I dont know how to check?

My Imac is a g3 333 strawberry version it has 196mb of ram and 6 gig hdd.  I have done a clean install of osx,  after erasing the password protected osx and erasing the clean 8.5 install. do you think its dodgy disks or am i using an old osx. ive heard any newer version of osx than panther make my particular imac very slow.

any more advise would be great.

Panther should be fine, but you should definitely get iTunes and Safari with it. Are they original discs, or back-ups?

dmgs - double-click on the file, and it will mount a virtual disc. You get a white icon that looks like a drive. Then just treat it as if it were a disc. Double-click on it to open the window, then either drag and drop the application inside onto your HD or double-click on the installer, depending on what's there.

I just checked the Apple website - you're underpowered for iTunes, as you need a 500MHz G3 and 256MB of RAM. You should be okay with Safari, though.

Thanks for the info ian, i've tried to install it how you said but it doesnt appear to be working, so I'm assuming that the ebay chappie has given me an iffy copy of the os. still at the moment the os works ok, as long as I only want to use the preview copy of ie. I'll buy a proper copy of panther when I get a bit of spare cash.

One other thing before I stop irratating you I installed os 8.5 first, as I understand it it should dual boot how do I access the older os.

OK, here's the score: Apple don't sell the OS on CD-Rs so you quite clearly have dodgy copies. Legal issues aside, it is perfectly possible that the CD-Rs don't contain working copies of the OS. In fact, this seems likely as you shouldn't be having the problems you are.

Getting classic to work:
In order for Classic to work you must have a correctly installed copy of Mac OS 9. I think Mac OS 8.6 will work also, but you'll need a more recent copy of the Startup Disk control panel....

Anyway, here's how to install Mac OS 9.

All versions of the Mac OS from System 0.x right up to 9.2 are what Linux users call "live CDs". Insert the CD. Restart your Mac, hold down "c". When the OS boots, open the Install Mac OS application.

It's as simple as that.

When you restart to Mac OS X, clicking on a pre-OS X application will launch Classic automatically.

To dual boot:
From Mac OS X to get OS 9:
Go to System Preferences
Click on Startup Disk
Choose the appropriately labelled volume

From Mac OS 9 to get Mac OS X:
Go to Control Panels > Startup Disk
Select the OS X system folder. Restart.

Not really relevant. It'll work fine, though the interface may feel a bit sluggish.
