There are no hardware or software recommendations as they go out of date so quickly.

Hardware I cannot stress enough that you should invest some money in proper networking kit. It really is very cheap these days. Buying a router takes all the headaches out of the basics of networking and Internet sharing. AOL and Tiscali come with issues - make sure any router you buy will support them.
