Taffyjock

I have run OS X on my Beige G3 without a problem, but it is considerably slower than runningit on a G4 or G5 machine. To give you an idea how fast it will run I ran a 'benchmark' test with several machines for a comparison. I used 'XBench 1.1.3' to do this. It runs a number of tests on the hardware to give a figure you can compare with a 'base' Mac. The results I got were, higher the better.......

Base machine PowerMac G4 Dual processor 800MHz running Mac OS X 10.2.6..... score = 100 (as given by software authors)

Beige G3 266MHz 256MB RAM running OS X 10.2.8 .......... score = 16.3

Powermac G4 400MHz 384MB with Radeon 8500 running OSX 10.3.9..... score = 56

Powerbook G4 1.5GHz 512MB RAM 15" display running OS X 10.3.9 ...... score = 130 (my brothers laptop)

Powermac G5 Dual 2.5GHz 1GB RAM running OS X 10.3.9 ..... score = 245

Yes, you can run OS X but it is short on horsepower compared with more modern tackle. But don't let that put you off if you want to give it a try!!! The G3 ran OK if slow and never crashed. Will give you a taste of the OS and how it works/differs from Windows. The 9500 should load up OK but the highest version that will load directly will be OS X 10.2.8 (Jaguar). This is due to the Firwire not being standard (not sure if your add-on Firewire changes this). If you want to load Panther (OSX 10.3) or Tiger (OS X 10.4 - but you need a DVD-ROM drive) , or you have problems with loading any version of OS X, there is a solution.

Grab a copy of 'XpostFacto' off the tinterwet - its open source. This allows you to load any version of OS X onto older Macs (providing they are up to it in hardware terms, yours should be). I didn't need it with the G3 but it wouldn't install Panther without it.

If you want to load OS X I suggest you install OS 9 on the 9500 first - again, should be no problem. Install 9.0.x or 9.1 first, then 9.2.1 followed by 9.2.2, there are full instructions on Apple's web site as the upgrade can be a bit fussy. With 9.2.2 OS X is an easy install as it is placed automatically in its own partition and allows dual booting from either OS when they are running, rather than start up as in Windows.

There's plenty of help out there, go for it!!!
