Helping out a friend who has just bought a new computer with this operating system, he wanting his old stuff copied onto his new 40Gb hard drive.. I looked for direct cable link, no sign of it, but there was this wizard which let you use a serial link! WHAT! I have been using a parallel cable with windows from version 95 onwards, and this software says you can use one if you are running Win2000 or win ME. Well, my friend has win95 first version on his old computer, and as windows ME is NTFS file system, I can't use laplink or direct cable link. We tried using serial, and after 6 hours, it still had another 18 hours to go, so we aborted, and I said I'd investigate further. Any ideas folks, please. Sensible ones please.

Hi I can't answer your specific Question, but as you titled your thread as "Win XP what do you think" here we go, --- off on a "tangent" My nephew is a professor of computer engineering @ the university of Birmingham @ Alabama USA. He worked on the beta version of "Whistler" as the pre-production version of Win XP was called, and he has told me to leave it alone for 9-12 months, even until they issue XP SE2, because of conflicts with present software. I really fancied upgrading from Win98se, because although I have fine tuned my present O/S, it still crashes occasionally, and I really would like to move away from the old Msdos based 9X series, but Win 2000 does not really have the "amatuer" driver support. My problems with Win98se are mostly graphics releted, I am into Photo and Video editing, but my recent problems have been with my AOL software. Anyhow, that is another story. On the other Video forums that I frequent, there are lots of folks having big problems with WinXP. So I will wait awhile before commiting. Sorry to be so negative, good luck with your problem, --- Alan
Ps I am going to dump AOL at this rate, they have dropped my connection 3 times while I have tried to post this message !

Why the hell doesn't he just add his old hard drive and drag it across en masse? Just because you bought a new drive, you dont have to dump the old one.. I have 5 HDrives in mine (244Gb)

Why make life hard work? Just do it the easy way!!

Well just this week I upgraded my Win98SE PC to XP. I was originally going to format the hard drive and do a nice new install. But after realising how much stuff I had on the hard drive that I wanted to keep... and not having the time or patience to copy it onto CD, I went for the upgrade option.

I downloaded ALL the win xp drivers I could find for all my 'bits' before the install. But didn't need any of them. XP recognised everything and runs like an absolute dream now! Very happy and so is my PC!
