I am contemplating getting a laptop (please take the term to include netbooks, regular laptops and refurbs upto about £300 ish). I don't really need one, but would like a better one than I have (a 1.2 GHz Via C3 based job with no battery and a dodgy fan). My main PC was built with the purpose of being an top end machine and does everything I want/need from a computer, except let me sit on the couch downstairs and work. I am looking around and have seen a few small laptops powered by the 1.6GHz Atoms so here is my question.

How much better is an Intel Atom at 1.6GHz when compared to something like an old Athlon XP at 1.6GHz? Yes I realise that the speeds are identical, but I hope the more modern chip is capable of more than the old. I mentioned the Athlon because my old desktop PC had one and I hope to get a good idea of performance of the new if possible (or is it an irrelevant question with other variables creating more noticeable differences).

Also, is it worth waiting? I realise technology always improves but is it worth buying an atom based laptop at all. I read there will be a dual core version soon and there are a few Via Nano based laptops that could be better.

Hi all,
Got a friends tosh lappy and it is extremely slow to do anything at all. The hard drive creaks and labours when asked to do anything so i was asked if i could replace with a larger one as this is only 20 gig but this is where i hit a brick wall! I cannot get into the bios, all you get is an option on the toshiba splash screen to select from 5 or so icons ( hdd, cd etc).
Firstly, am i going to be able to access the bios if the hdd is replaced as at the moment neither f1, f2 nor DEL give access.
Is the hdd just a normal 2.5 ide drive and are they accessible without a major strip down , keys out affair ?
Any help and/or advice would be greatly appreciated..cheers gs:)

data recovery from corrupt mft

after an unexpected power cut rebooting the pc greeted me with the corrupt master file table message, unfortunately windows, as regular as clockwork, was unable to recover it. Its not the primary drive its a drive i use to backup and store pictures home videos etc and there is alot of data there (nearly 500gb of the 750gb cap).

This drive is only about 3 months old so dont think its totally dead but i also dont want to have to format it if it can be helped without retrieving the data as, although most of it is backed up on multiple medias (memory sticks, dvd's etc) alot is also from other family members and would be a real pain to recollect.

I have been looking for a freeware tool to pull the data off the drive but so far rather unsuccessfully as they either dont work, or dont show the drive, seen some pay to use software out there but with a hefty price tag hence the search for freeware, so here i require some help, do you know of any decent either freeware or cheap software? or of something i could try to access the drive.

[edit]forgot to say my os is windows vista home premium fully updated.

HDD woes

My brothers computer HDD has seemingly just died, but it is still recognised by the bios on the post screen at startup. it just wont load into windows

i tried moving the cable to another port and a new cable niether have worked, the HDD spins up and makes a whiring sound for about 2 seconds then goes quiet but the activity light flashes like its working, the only other thing i noticed was although its recognised at start up it isnt there in the bios menus, just the dvd-rw and memory card reader

the HDD is a 320gb western digital with 3 partitions (windows, music, movies) and the mobo is a [url=http://www.foxconnchannel.com/product/Motherboards/detail_overview.aspx?ID=en-us0000307]foxconn[/url] socket am2

the only thing i can think is wrong now is the mobo is faulty, anybody else got any ideas

oh i will be trying the hdd in my computer at somepoint too, to make sure it is either ok or not

Problem with second hard drive

Hello, I have a 500Gb Samsung F1 as my main HD and i decided to use a spare Seagate 160Gb for a bit of extra storage, The spare drive was formatted and i plugged it in the second Sata port, job done i thought.

Im getting lockups/atapi errors and eventually the drive icon disappears, I have used two drives before with no problems but im not completely sure if i need to use a jumper or that i might be missing a stupidly obvious thing which i need to do.

The second drive is a Seagate 160Gb Sata drive which i thought would be ok if it was formatted, I thought i could just plug it in & everything will be ok with the PC automatically configuring the drive.

Any ideas?

Thunderbird and Yahoo

Whilst reading MM this week I noticed a letter in Aaron's column about using Thunderbird to get email from yahoo and hotmail. so thinks I, can't be hard that would be useful so i downloaded T'bird and following aaron's instructions set it up. and nothing happens, i get a message saying that the password is wrong, i know its not, i have checked everything i can think of and still can't get it to work.

could it be that my email address ends in .co.uk and i've put in the incoming server as .com? maybe thats a stupid question.

Server drive Promise 4210 tx pci sata raid card with two axtor sata2 drives total 1gb

500w psu

Win XP Pro Sp2 in "classic " mode with all visual styles switched off.[/size]

The setup as listed runs like a rocket unless the sata drives power is plugged in then it wont boot.
The board runs its POST the Promise card posts,the mylex card posts, then a blank screen for around two seconds and a message PRESS A KEY TO REBOOT.

I have swapped out all components (including the entire Promise raid setup)and found to be working fine.

Ive moved the PCi Cards to other slots,nearer to or further from the top

Windows will load with the sata drives power unplugged.The raid card is recognised with no conflicts in Device mgr and no resource conflicts shown.

The ram has been tried at full speed then under clocked to no effect.

Ive hooked up a second PSU to power the sata drives independantly to no effect.

Everything works fine independantly
Im not sure where the error message is coming from, as both raid controllers and the board Post OK.
The Boot sequence is FDD -CD -Scsi/INt -Other
It will boot from both removeables and ,as I have said ,the Mylex.

Both cards have the latest Windows driver

Any ideas?

Hi, I have just installed a Club 3d Hd 4670 and now the screen on my Acer X223W is too large, you move the sreen about an inch side to side and top to bottom with the mouse. The resolution is set at 1680 x 1050 but I had to manually set this as the catalyst does net detect the monitor it's just default. Got latest drivers off website (ATI) and tried a previous version. Hope someone can help, cheers Jon.

the power indicator light on my tower which normaly only remains static (as i,m sure it should).it is now consantly flashing regardless of what i,m doing on the computer.

what could br causeing this ? and is it causeing any harm ? .

I have just built myself a server, it has 2 hard drives 1 x 250 sata and 1x 1tb sata installed windows home server perfect, great all seems to be working, then when i looked at the hard drive size my 250gig drive apparently only has 60 gig and the 1tb drive only has 200, i know theres a solution i've read it before but i can't remember what it is can somebody please help

Weird mouse action

Just recently my mouse has started acting weird, if I scroll down using the wheel it will get so far and then jump to the bottom, if at any point (web page or word doc) I start to scroll up it will jump to the bottom of the page. I changed my mouse for one that works OK, but it still does the same thing, very weird.

I have just plugged in an old USB mouse and it works fine, so it must be the mouse socket on the motherboard :crying:, or do you know better;)

Laptop Fan is all the time.

Perhaps you all could throw some light on a situation for me. Is it normal for a laptop fan to run constantly? I am inclined to say no as I've seen identical model laptop with a fan that only kicks in occasionally and as needed where as mine idles all the time and ramps up the speed as needed.

In trying to sort it out I removed the fan cover and unscrewed the HSF combo. The heatsink was full of dust and fluff and I noticed a distinct lack of thermal paste on the CPU. I cleaned out the heatsink and figuring that adding a blob of paste shouldn't be detrimental, added some cooling paste. When I put it all back together the fan runs constantly as before.

Any ideas as to what else I could do, or whether this is normal behaviour?

sudden shutoff.

after about half an hour a p3 700mhz i have keps shutting off, the heatsink on the processor is a passive one and there is a case fan blowing directly onto it. it just shuts off, no beeps, no warnings. it just shuts off and then goes back the the memory test post screen.

the mb is an msi ms6156, slot 1.

im at a loss heelp meeeeeeeeee!!!!!

Laptop Screen has "stuck pixels"?

Hi,

Last night I switched off my laptop. I'd been running a second screen off it and so the main laptop screen simply had the desktop background showing, nothing too taxing.

Today, I switched on the laptop (no secondary screen) and a line of what I presumed to be stuck pixels had appeared. It was a thin (1mm wide) vertical line, about 1cm long.

I started to run the Jscreen fixer and that hasn't helped. So I tried the pressure method and it seems that in fact, it is not stuck pixels, but the LCD liquid? After my various poking and proddings, it's now a small splodge.

Damn annoying, while I suppose I could ignore it, is there anything I could try? The laptop is still within its warranty, would Dell replace the screen or fix it? Or am I out on that idea too?

Re Sound card disabling on board sound

Hi Folks

after lots of troube with my pc I am finaly getting there . the only (SAYS he touching wood and holding a rabbits foot with fingers crossed ) is that when I add my creative labs sound card to the asrock 4 core dual vista MB it disables the realtec audio ie realtec is not seen any where on the PC and I am unable to use the front panel inputs , mic and Hphone.

If I remove the sound card and just use the on board sound card every thing is OK . I previously had it all working with the sound card . If with the sound card in place I check the bios setting and enable on board sound the system freezes on re boot .

apart from opening the window and seeing how far I can fling the sound card any ideas?

Cant install Devil may cry 4 PC version

I have been trying for the last 2 hours to install Devil May Cry 4 PC version.

Each time it starts the installation,it hangs when it tries to install Direct X 9C.

Status

Installing DirectX 9C.........

The green progress bar does not move.

I have the latest version of DX9,and my PC meets and go's beyond the game requirements .

DVI Cable Confusion

Hi there,

I am just about to buy the following monitor:

As you can see, it has a DVI-D connection (Dual Link presumably). However, my graphics card (XFX 8800GTS 320mb) has a Dual Link DVI-I connection - so, what cable do I get to connect them up? I can't find any (Dual Link) DVI-I to DVD-D cables, so can I deduce from this that a DVI-D to DVI-D cable will do the job for me? Or have I totally misunderstood?

Any advice would be much appreciated :)

System in sig1

Hi all, still can't figure what's going on here, as computer is still stuttering and locking up. Have sent for some new memory, arctic silver, and arctic clean, and am going to go over the lot, and maybe put my Phenom back in to try it. This is getting silly now....:angry:....will be running it at low detail soon. Have updated patch, drivers latest, Windows fix and all sorts and this bl**dy card still crashes with errors, and stutters with any action on screen, apart from PC only and background.

What is really annoying though is sig2 can run the game flawlessly as far as framerates and playability...and it is well below sig1 (in theory anyway). On one of the rare crashes where I actually got back to the desktop, without a reboot, CPU was at 100%....surely this can't be right? Heat isn't helping though as had CPU alarm going the other day, and it is set to go off at 80C, GPU was over 65C, but it had already crashed a few times long before it got there. Think I'll be going back to Nvidia very shortly.....:cool:

New LCD Monitor Problems

Yesterday - after having owned for years a great but incredibly ugly/heavy 19" CRT monitor - I ordered/purchased the Aria/Digimate 22" L-2248WD:

This morning I received the above item - and, actually, the Brightness was 400cd/m2, not 300cd/m2. See:

(so I think the write up was confusing it with the very similar - and constantly advertised - DGM L-2231WD, which does indeed have a 300cd/m2).

Anyway, I am having problems with the new monitor! When I first turned it on, I had extreme problems 'getting into XP Home' - the screen was either blank/'dead' or flickered madly. Aha, I thought wisely, I need to change the refresh rate from 75khz to 60khz and change the display resolution to 1680 x 1050. Eventually, in between the mad flickering, I just managed to dive into Desktop Properties and change these settings - and then everything seemed fine (well, almost, but I will come back to that later).

However, after rebooting into XP I had the same problem again. However, when I booted into Vista Ultimate - as I have a dual boot system - I had no problems: no flickering or anything. It seemd to automatically adjust the settings - like Refresh Rate, etc.

I then re-plugged my old CRT monitor just to check the XP settings - the refresh rate was still 60khz, but the display resolution had defaulted back to 1280 x 1024, so I put it back to 1680 x 1050. Rebooted - but still no luck, but Vista is still fine. I've subsequently gone back to my CRT to re-check the XP settings, but they seem OK now (60khz refresh rate, 1680 x 1050 resolution).

One other thing to note. In both Vista and XP (on the one time I managed to get into it successfully) some of the options in the OSD Menu seem denied to me. So in the main menu the Auto Set Up option is greyed/blanked out - as is the entire Display Adjust option. Also, within Colour Temperature I am unable to access the Auto Gain option, and the main Auto Tuning button on the front of the actual monitor seems to do nothing.

Now, any ideas for me? Any advice would be greatly appreciated, believe me!

I recently bought a Dell case (w/ PSU) and motherboard (w/ CPU) on eBay as Dell overstock brand new for £60 delivered. The case is a Dell Vostro 100 Slim and the CPU is a VIA C7-D 1.5GHz.

The problem I'm having is I cant find any reference to the Vostro Slim 100 or Dell using a VIA C7-D processor. Attached is the picture, the label on the motherboard furthest to the right reads: "CN-0WP618-69702-788-0089".

I can't find the spec for it, and neither can the eBay seller. Does anyone know anything about it? (Looks like a VIA chipet, its mATX form factor).

i have recorded something on the sky hdd and i was wondering if i would be able to connect it up to a pc and make a dvd of it? its a capital of culture program ( so no issues with recording rights etc,me thinks) my son was on the program and none of his classmates have seen it or the teachers? would like to put it on disc and let them see it as 22 kids and 9 teachers in my living room aint gonna happen!

Phone line has a lot of noise

Hi as the title says my phone line has a lot of noise when my internet is plugged into it, When i have just my phone plugged in there isn't any noise or static on the line. Does anyone know what may course this? I have tried changing the filter to no avail.

The unit, which was presumably a “Media Centre” had been written off, and its “TV” card and remote control removed. The retention frame for the microprocessor cooler was broken. Any testing would require use of three hands or more.
I began by totally dis-assembling in order to examine the board carefully, but could see no visual problem. When I tried to switch on, there was evidence of “something happening”, a vague noise and an illuminated (flashing) LED on the back, but no start-up.
I tried the PSU in another shuttle (spacewalker) and found it would not power that up. I dismantled the power supply and replaced seven bulging capacitors, and it will now fire up the “spacewalker” correctly, but not the MS 6760.
I connected a known good standard PSU and tried again, but it would not start up. Because the “on” button was on an unusual front panel, I located the normal “pwr” pins and tried shorting with a screwdriver in time honoured fashion. Still nothing. I don't know why, but I then tried shorting the green pin14 “PS-on” connector from the PSU. The flashing LED went off, and the vague noise subsided. Pressing the “on” button brought forth life! A 4-second press would then give typical shut down. Similarly, the “pwr” pins could be shorted for start and shut down.
If the mains power is removed from PSU, only initial brief shorting of pin 14 will permit normal operation. A permanent short would allow start up, but no shut down was possible.
Clearly I could fit a “reset” button on the back, for use after a mains shut down, but there must be a more elegant method. I need more information regarding the typical motherboard circuitry for pin 14, or maybe a simple “work around”.
I have never (knowingly) met this fault before with a PC.
Any suggestions?

For no reason I can think of, ALL my 'contacts' have just disappeared! The contact list shows as completely empty! There were hundreds of names in there a couple of days ago.

I haven't installed anything, nor downloaded any updates for at least 2 weeks.

Where should the 'Live Mail' contact list be stored, and in what format - any ideas?

HP D7360 Duplexing problem

Has anyone got a HP D7360 printer, and using the duplex attachment, as I am having major problems getting the duplex attachment to work.

In the print screen there is a option for manual duplexing, but nothing for automatic duplexing, can't find much on HP site about this.

Laptop boots to Video Out

Hi all,
A friend of mine is having some problems with a laptop, and since i recommended it to him, it seems to be my problem as well now! :D
The laptop boots up ok & generally works fine (if a little slow, but that could be attributed to all the bloatware he has on it!)
However the display is set automatically to the VGA out port!

He can get around it by pressing Fn+F5, but everytime the PC re-boots it reverts & he has to change it again!

I've talked him through starting into Safe Mode to try & eliminate the drivers as a problem & he swears he hasnt touched any BIOS settings - doesnt know where they are!

Anyone have any pointers on what it could be?

ADVENT HDD ISSUE

Hi there

I have got an Advent pc and it works great..... well it did.... had a software issue with Vista and got sick of issues with Vista so I decided to install Windows XP pro.

I get the usual Blue Windows setup screen and it all looks good but after all the setup files are installed, it stops at "Setup is starting Windows" , and that it, doesnt go no further, no blue screen of death , no weird writing on the screen , just seems to sit there and do nothing

I have a 500GB SATA HDD and it works great but it does not let me install XP, now I read the comment about the Sata and Raid. But I have checked all that in the Bios, under "Onchip SATA TYPE" and made the adjustments,I cant seem to switch off the Raid, but I can alter the setting by moving it to the following .... IDE or IDE->AHCI or NATIVE IDE or RAID. None of these alterations make a difference.

The motherboard is a Foxconn A6VMA with a AMD chipset in it, if that helps

I just want XP in my computer, is that too much to ask ?? At my wits end just now!!

I am trying to Dl a working copy of Mythbuntu. I have tried a couple of direct DL's with no joy. Both took 2/3 hours and got corrupted.

So I thought I would try Bit Torrent for the first time. I got it from the official site (I hope!) and installed and ran it, went to the Myth DL page and clicked the correct DL.

But its soooo slow. ETA is hovering between a few days and several weeks.

Is there anything I can do about this?

PC only boots when it feels like it

yep im back with another problem, only this time its my pooter :(
i think it's a problem with the motherboard but most of the time when I try to use the computer all it does is turn on the fans and bleep at me. One long beep then 3 short which seems to point at a memory fault.
I have tried so many things and I just have no idea what to do with it, I tried putting in different RAM but when I turned it on absolutely nothing happened, it seemed to power up but with nothing on the screens and no keyboard lights.

Its an Asus P5k Premium WiFi – AP motherboard and the rest of the spec is in the sig

Got a horrible head cold thing going on at the moment and I am struggling a little as I try to work out MD5 for the first time.

I am downloading the latest Mythbuntu (alternate-i386), if I click MD5SUM's on the myth download page I am presented with this:

H i guys I am having a problem viewing products on a website I use often, Instead of being able to click on the pictures like normal they are not loading up and just showing a red x. Does anyone have any ideas? I tried resetting all the browser settings and it still is the same.#

2gb Dual Channel Vs 3gb Single Channel

Hi Guys this just popped into my head so here goes.

I have a random stick of "Value" Patriot ram bashing from another system. My 2gb of OCZ ram currently runs in Dual Channel mode which i understand to be much better then Single.

When i put this Extra 1gb stick of ram in my system the Other 2gb of OCZ ram no longer ran in dual channel mode. and on top of that my system became unstable.

So really my question is, Can 2 sticks of ram run in dual channel mode, whilst one doesnt. and if so How??

Problems with dell installation

Hi there,

I have an issue with my dell computer, I had Vista 32bit in the system , but due to issues with some software, I have decided to go back to xp pro. When I try to boot from the cdrom drive , it all looks good until I reach the point where it says "Setup is loading files" then "SETUP IS STARTING WINDOWS" ..... give it a few secs... then I get a blue screen saying a lot of stuff and a number "STOP 0x0000007B ( 0xF78D2524 then a load of codes ....) What is this and why will it not install ????
