I was being helped with a friend to see if we could fix it, then without warnign PC turned off and would not turn back on no bios boot/ beep nothing.

Did the whole safe bios restore with the jumpers- still nothing.

So have exchanged mobo (confirmed faulty) for ASUS P5Q pro (more stable apparently and better OCer and ATI Xfire).

GFX also was to blame confirmed again faulty exchanged for an ATI 3870 x2 (apparently as good as 8800gt in sli!)... now waiting for components to all get here!

cheers for help guys! Please help

Hi again, this is now urgent!

I had probs with the drivers origionally- the ones on the CD didnt work so I had to use the latest ones from Nvida anyway.

But for you guys I uninstalled the drivers anyway and reinstalled them. and used the driver sweeper This happened:

http://img142.imageshack.us/my.php?image=dsc00132hp2.jpg

So I rebooted and all I got after that little vista loading bar is a black screen. I tried safe mode but that wouldnt boot either. Im trying to boot from the Vista CD at the moment but so far all Ive got is a black screen. It booted once and it had repaired something then died. Oh and I uninstalled it as told normally then driver sweeper in safe mode.

I can acess the bios but as you can see it looks like that has died too:

http://img212.imageshack.us/my.php?image=dsc00133af9.jpg

WTF is wrong with this PC? Is it the GFX card the mobo? I'm now desperate. I havnt done anything stupid- its just stopped.

I cant boot vista even from the DVD.

This is my brothers laptop.

Edit: vista is back up and running... just the boot up time is now for some reason REALLY long any ideas?

bios is reflashed...what just happened? ok I jut re installed the latest nVidia driver and played crysis and the card got so hot i just burned myself on the top of it. So whilst the idle temps are low Id imagine that the load temps are very high. New drivers havnt helped and have made the PC relally slow.

RE: 8800gt + ASUS p5N-D = disaster! Please help

It sounds to me like it could be a problem at the driver level as those 8800GT temps are fine. So I'd suggest getting the latest drivers from nvidia but uninstall the drivers normally first and then use Drive Sweeper to remove the last of the driver files but do this in safe mode. Then restart and install the latest drivers. Hopefully that will fix the problem.

http://www.nvidia.com

http://downloads.guru3d.com/Guru3D---Driver-Sweeper-(Setup)-download-1655.html

(sorry about the urls not working properly, they keep coming back to this page) (?)

Edit: Damn urls are giving me jip.

RE: 8800gt + ASUS p5N-D = disaster! Are all replies as good as this?!

Thank you for your kind welcome!

Ok my system is the following:
Q6600 g0
4GB 800mHz cl4 OCZ Reaper RAM
ASUS p5N-D (with the optional northbridge fan)
OCZ 500W stealthXtreme PSU
arctic cooling freezer 7 pro
zotac 512MB 8800gt (not OC)
seagate 500GB HDD (primary)
seagate 160GB HDD (media)

thats all the major components I think.

I ran memtest on my 4GB Reaper ram (2X2GB) and no errors on first 5/6 tests.

I have manually set the ram to the settings fromt the OCZ website (4-4-4-15) its rated for 2.1V and is according to the table if im reading it right in CPUz at 2.2V (EPP#1) the mobo set it to some timings somehtihng like 5-5-5-18 for some reason!

I am idling with the mobo at around 35-38C and the CPU at 31C underload it raises to around 35C in the ASUS 'turbo mode'.

I put the case on the side and booted crysis, I pressed the any key to continue and INSTSANTLY it BSOD on me! Its doing it more than it used to too- I used to just get the black screen now im gettign more BSOD and very few black screens! It seem the additional cooling has made things WORSE!

Ok for cooling i have a front 120mm fan (hiper), an 80mm side fan (hiper), a generic 80mm fan halfway through the case after the HDDs to help the air get from the front to the GFX, a rear generic 80mm fan (exhaust), as well as 2 (!) exhaust PCI fans (thermaltake) BOTH under the GFX card.

It cant be an overheating issue, the top of the card is warm to touch but not burning, its at around 60C when being gently used but theres so much cooling on it its just frustrating. I cant obviously get an accurate reading under crysis as it always dies.

When I first started with the PC I could play COD indefinetly with the fan at 38% with it being really really hot, now it will crash with a blank screen after a bit and the card isnt even that hot and the fans at 100%!

your help is really appreciated

I can provide a pic of the case set up if you wish? is the card faulty? Is it a problem with the mobo? I know there are issues with a 750i chipset but I havnt had the usual probs...

cheers again.
RE: 8800gt + ASUS p5N-D = disaster! Posting the PSU you have would also help and the full system spec so we can see the power draw.

I'd try what Wiz has suggested (if he can keep his handbag cool anything he says must be worth a try :P ) and also perhaps see if the same problems occur with the side panel open and the PC on its side (so all the hot air rises out of the case and no hot pockets develop).

Regards,
Michael

RE: 8800gt + ASUS p5N-D = disaster! Please help

It sounds like either you have a duff graphics card or something is overheating. It's a process of elimination I'm afraid.

You should run memtest from here (http://www.memtest.org/) and check the memory for errors.

The run Orthos from here (http://www.overclock.net/downloads/138142-orthos.html) Orthos will test the cpu with the gromacs core or both the cpu and ram with the blend test.

Use realtemp (http://www.techpowerup.com/realtemp/) to monitor you cpu temp and see what it is.

You could also run a disk check to make sure the file system is intact and ok...:) Are you sure the ram is running at it's correct speed and voltage? Some mobo's auto does not supply enough for performance ram. Try Cpu-z (http://www.cpuid.com/cpuz.php)

Edit: Oh and welcome to the forum. :)

8800gt + ASUS p5N-D = disaster! Please help

Hi there.

A friend recommended this site as apparently you guys know what you are taking about and frankly I need the help!

I have as said above I have a Zotac 512MB 8800gt (brand new) which is being used with a Q6600 on an ASUS 750i p5N-D. Its my first build and has potential to be by far the best PC I have ever owned.

The problems I have though are annoying. I origionally had problems with the drivers on the CD not working at all so I downloaded the newest ones fron Nvidia's site all good I can play COD4.

The problem is that when I play COD4 for around 20-30mins the screen wth either completely turn black and Ill get the monitor is going to sleep thing, the screen will go black with random dotted colours or i get a BSOD (image here: http://img393.imageshack.us/my.php?image=dsc00128hk7.jpg)

This happens after about 10 mins of gameplay with Crysis (today it just got to the maximum game theing then died). I have decent cooling in the case (2X 80mm 1X120mm and 2X PCI exhaust) and set the fan on the card to 100% for crysis, stock for COD4. I also have TWO (!) PCI exhaust fans just for the GFX incase it was that but these additions seem to make it worse if anything!

Is there a problem with the card, according to GPUz it is idling at around 50C (used to be 60C) which seems reasonable I cant imagine under the thrashing from Crysis its getting above 70C.

Is the card faulty or is it somehting Im doing?

Sorry for such a long post I'm just frustrated- I spent the extra money on the exhaust fans and its juat an 8800gt not like a GTX or anything!

all help really appreciated- really!

cheers,

SMIDSY.
