Mind you it could be argused that being as he put together the A500 Batman pack that there wouldnt have been much of an Amiga market in the Uk without David Pleasance, and don't forget he and Colin (Proudfoot) ran one of only 2 divisions in the entire CBM empire that was making money. They both had some great plans for Amiga International - which would have ben the evolved form of Commodore Uk if they had bought out the Amiga and bits of Commodore at the auction instead of EsCom. All what ifs, but David seemed to be a damn good bloke and often listened to ideas and suggestions in person.

Now if it was Jonathan Anderson..... that I would expect.

RE: What Actually Is Amiga

I think we can lay the blame for the demise of the Amiga in the UK ,quite squarely at the feet of Mr David Pleasance........."I'M THE DIRECTOR,WHY WOULD I ASK ANYONE FOR ADVICE,I KNOW EVERYTHING!" he is reputed to have said when asked in an interview if he would like to hear from Amiga owners in the UK about their ideas for the future of the machine.
RE: What Actually Is Amiga

Hey....Jack (Morris?)....aged 14.....don't I know you?
PM sent m8

Yes I suppose it is nostalgia keeping it going, hardware is still being released for it (take a looksie at "uk.amigakit.com")
I have several at home with me now, just sent away for another what they call 'PowerTowers' to make it easier to upgrade the amiga's. You know I've got wireless networking on my Amiga 1200 too.

RE: What Actually Is Amiga
asininity (17/03/2007)
Is there going to be a come back on an improved system or is it always going to be a retro thing?
I hope so? there is a weekly article on Amiga in MM.

I would say though Amiga is not the OS more the PC or the manufacturer name (Commodore Amiga), Workbench was the OS.
A little like a PC won't work without Windows / Linux an Amiga wouldn't work without Workbench.

And I think a Mac won't work without an Apple

RE: What Actually Is Amiga

I've still got my A1200. It has the the AGA chipset, a 250MB Hard Disk, external CD-ROM drive and 4MB of RAM! (I upgraded the RAM). It's operating system is Amiga Workbench (V4.0 I think).

Mine was used for video editing (yes it was possible!) and gaming.

04jmorri: how old are you??? can't believe you don't know what Amiga is! I'm 24 lol :D I absolutely adored the Amiga, it was the computer that got me hooked on computing.

RE: What Actually Is Amiga

I was just about to ask the same question. I can just remember playing on one when i was a kid but not much else... why the hipe? Is there going to be a come back on an improved system or is it always going to be a retro thing?

RE: What Actually Is Amiga

My Amiga boots completely (to the equivalent of your Windows desktop) in 6.5 seconds from ROM and a (slow) hard disk, and once it's booted the once, you can make it reboot from a RAM-Disk even quicker. And that's using a 25MHz 68030 (equivalent of a 30MHz 80386)... now we have processors over a hundred times faster, and much faster memory, but still they seem to take an age to start up.

And oh how wonderful the Amiga's Dynamic RAM disk was - it grows and shrinks as required to fit its content... All OS's should have one of these as standard IMHO.

And being about the first home computer to offer preemptive multitasking was cool. People got excited when Microsoft announced it in 1995 as a key feature of Windows 95, how we laughed because we had been multitasking for 10 years by that time!

The Amiga was a fantastic machine, but unfortunately the hardware did not evolve quickly enough to keep up with what the users wanted.

RE: What Actually Is Amiga

good question is that...........whys it still going ?

i have an amiga 600 500 and a 1200 and i still use them.

to be honest the amiga operating system is still good and when i use mine i think what the amiga could have been but it wasnt meant to be :(

RE: What Actually Is Amiga

Thanks was just curious about what it actually was, as i've used windows linux and mac before but never Amiga os.

RE: What Actually Is Amiga

Ah, the young ones.
The Commadore Amiga is a platform (like PC, Mac etc). It's main rival was the Atari ST back in the late 80's and early 90's. Quite why it's still going I don't know but nostalgia probably plays a big part in it.

(I'm ducking)

RE: What Actually Is Amiga

Best thing is to have a read of this: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Amiga.

What Actually Is Amiga

Hi there, sorry about this very nooby question, what actually is Amiga.

I understand that it is an operating system, but what is it designed for?, what hardware supports it?, how long has been around for?

I've been wondering what it is for a while now, as its in Micromart.

Thanks a lot Jack:D
