I feel sorry for poor old Vic-20 Mart, nobody ever worried when that section was brought to a close, so why worry about Amiga Mart?

RE: Save Amiga Mart!

Just my 2 penneth worth, here.

I, too used to own an Amiga. It started out as an A1200 with a 10Mb HDD (no that's not a typing error!) and ended up as a kind of Franken-Miga in a full tower case, with P/S2 keyboard, Blizzard '040 expansion, Blizzard SCSI, 48Mb Fast Ram, Kickstart 3.6, Surf Squirrel (because the Blizzard wouldn't recognise ejectable SCSI media) and a nightmare of homemade SCSI data cabling inside.

I've also seen the Amiga Rise, fall, fall and further fall through messageboards such as MooBunny and Amiga News Network.

So . . . while I appreciate the coverage of Amiga news in Micro Mart, and believe that it contributes to the magazines sense of identity greatly, I feel it's time to fold it into an "Alternative O/S" page that covers other operating systems that are out there and may, like AmigaOS "hanging on by the skin of their teeth". Some suggestions would be RiscOS, Ataris O/S, Haiku, QNX, the various BSD's etc.

By "bundling together" the alt.OSes maybe a bigger space could be allocated on a weekly basis, with the "OS du jour" rotating on a schedule, or as news becomes available. I think it would fill a useful gap between the magazines great coverage of the cutting edge and retro sides to computing.

Anyway, just my opinion.

RE: Save Amiga Mart!

As an Ex-Amiga 500 owner, I do have soft spot for it but the circumstances facing the Amiga at the moment are kind of very confusing and I'm often left seriously puzzled by what I've read in this section. In that the Amiga in 2008 represents a really small user base, I do agree that there is a lot of merit in doing something like an "alternative" feature instead. The retro computers of which the Amiga is one, do deserve coverage so maybe this whole angle should be totally re-packaged but a weekly column for the Amiga alone isn't justified.

RE: Save Amiga Mart!

amiga mart was what surprised me when i first picked up the mag, i'm all for keeping it,

i'd also like to see a risc os mart tho!

RE: Save Amiga Mart!

what about a dave rice section, bit like system builder, but networker ??
id read that ??
if dave has forgotten more than jason knows ( read it somewhere on forum ) it's gotta be good ??
im just trying to setup a nas drive, doing my head in, so there's the first week sorted lol

RE: Save Amiga Mart!

The first amiga i had was a 1.3 amiga 500 then a 2.0 the a600 then an a1200.And now i have none :(.I would be really sad to see it go as i still like to know what is going on in the scene and it's great to bring back memories of playing it came from the desert in the dark at home when i was a kid......."thirsting for the destruction for all that is human!"

RE: Save Amiga Mart!

When I first found out there was an Amiga column in a magazine that is reasonably priced I was really happy. Sure a few boards turned up and the OS can be ported to other platforms.

At the end of the day its finished. I have no problem with i remaining in Micro Mart as I do like to skip a few pages and you can never please everyone with all the articles.

I do however feel that now years after the amiga was resigned to a cult following, it is time to clearly stamp it as retro and should perhaps form a significant part of a retro section.

Sometimes I do feel Micromart does struglle for articles and revisits or revamps articles.

There are a wealth of retro machine from a bygone age which I for one would love to read about. I think the "Alternative Mart" idea isn't a bad one. Along with the Atari ST there's Acorn RISC OS, with interesting new hardware and software still being released for that platform. There's even a Sinclair QL scene still going strong.

Along with those hardware platforms, that section of the mag could bring up alternative operating systems. After all, Linux has had a huge amount of coverage, with pretty obscure distributions being discussed. Of course it's by far the most popular alternative OS, but there are others out there with interesting features and a lot of potential. For example Haiku, the open source successor to BeOS, or SkyOS, a full desktop OS with some interesting features. The amazing thing about SkyOS is that it's created almost single-handedly by one programmer (Robert Szeleney) in his spare time. Puts my occasional bit of dabbling in programming into perspective...

There's plenty of interesting content out there to fill a page every week.

RE: Save Amiga Mart!

Amiga i think is worth keeping in the magazine. i've really enjoyed reading about what should have been. While I appreciate that, given the shambles that is the Amiga market at the moment and given the niche nature of that market, it must be hard for Sven to find things to write about week after week, I think Micro Mart will suffer if Sven's contibutions disappear altogether.

Would it not be possible to rebrand Sven's section as Alternative Mart (or something snappier), a section that looks not only at Amigas but other platforms, too? Platforms such as the Atari ST, and maybe some really retro systems (not the games machines covered by Retro Mart). I guess it depends on Sven and his wider knowledge.

Just a thought.
