I think that before you splash any cash you should do as much reading up as possible. There have been some good points made in previous posts.

If you want a machine to play games on you wont have to buy much more than a simple A1200. If you want to do more serious stuff with it you'll need to think HDD, CDRom drives, tower cases etc.

Amigakit are a great UK based shop. I'd look there for some solid advice. Another place is your local usergroup. http://midlandamigagroup.info may be close to you, but there may well be others. 3CAG, ANT are just 2 I could think of, but I'm sure there are more.

A good starting point is a full Amiga 1200 with Workbench,Mouse and PSU expect to pay £35-50. I got a full A1200 with 2GB HD few years ago from Ebay for £50 but look around.A memory expansion is also good.

A600 is also good but less powerful and less expandable.

Most software can be found on the net but Kickstarts and Workbench are illegal to be passed around!

WinUae the excellent! Amiga Emulator will also give you an idea of Amiga Software but if you like tinckering with computers your a MM Reader then the real thing is good fun.

HD are quite cheap to add Ive got CF 2 IDE 44 Pin adaptor in both my A1200 and A600.

A PCMCIA compact flash adaptor is also a good idea for moveing files between PC and Amiga.

It all depends what you want to use it for and then getting the software for it. The best these days would be (my oppinion) Amiga 1200. There has been one in MM Classifieds for some time £35.

Amiga 1200 can be basic, but then do you want a hard drive. If not you may need an external floppy drive to add to the internal. This would bring down the amount of disk swapping. ie Wordworth comes on 5 floppy disks Dpaint comes on about 4 floppy disks. Then there is workbench about 4 disks. You can see by now you could do with one that as a hard drive, or put one in yourself. Then you can install them as you do a PC.

Realy though it depends what comes with the Amiga you purchase, do you want it for gaming. Can you still get the games / Software.

Myself I had off the forum (someone was giving them away) A set of Workbench 3.0 disks. I still haven't got hold of a decent (cheapish Amiga, I will one day) I want an amiga as I still have certain software I can use.

I went car booting this morning, there was a Amiga on sale but it was the A600. I was tempted but it needs Workbench 2.0. I no longer have 2.0. you can fit a HDD in the A600 but then you need the HDD. Did this A600 have a hard drive, I asked as per usual they don't know.

But with any Amiga, it's not going to be of much use if it doesn't come with Workbench (Amiga Windows equivelant) Then does it have the PSU / mouse.

Then maybe you could do with a CD Rom and so on, the wants are endless.

Although you can find Amiga 1200s for sale (MM ebay etc) that can come with a lot of kit. It's then how much money do you have. You may purchase one for £50 but then you don't find the software you want so that's £50 down the drain, unless you can sell it on.

which model and how should i expect to pay for it and where from?

i don't know much about Amiga so any help welcome.
