That's the latest word from Fortify Software, the result of a study by the security-software vendor into the security of Open Source Software, an undertaking aimed at "informing" enterprise users of the "risks" associated with the Wild West of non-proprietary software.

The study, which presumably represents a startling advancement in scientific research, studied eleven Java-based Open Source offerings without commercial support and managed to extrapolate those results into a resounding condemnation of the entire community. According to Fortify "the most widely-used open source software packages for the enterprise are exposing users to significant and unnecessary business risk" and that "nearly all OSS communities fail to provide users access to security expertise to help remediate these vulnerabilities and security risks." Really? The most widely used Open Source packages are all Java-based and lack commercial support? The eleven projects you studied represent nearly all Open Source communities? And why, exactly, are the names of these projects noticeably absent from what is otherwise a press release just brimming with information?

Of course, Fortify doesn't want us to take it personally, telling Linux Insider they hope for a positive response. Still, there are "no real concerns about a negative reaction to the study findings." Hardly surprising. One has to wonder what kind of concerns they have about certain high-profile proprietary software packages with documented history of sweeping security breaches under the rug, and if they're aware that while those "secure" producers are busy practicing the maxim "Deny, Deny, Deny," the Open Source community is busy patching the holes.

Anyone who would like to read the report and learn just which projects compose the entirety of the Open Source community these days can register at Fortify's website to receive a copy of the report. Imports bookmarks password and history from firefox and your done. Display related niggles. Native resolution and refresh is rarely detected and/or correct, and the display options GUI simply doesn't list the right resolutions/refresh rate to correct the error.

2. Gaming niggles. Even the casual PC gamer like myself (still enjoying Black & White 2) is forced into an XP dual boot purely for gaming needs. Though Wine is much improved, it's still pretty dire compared to running games in Windows.

3. Mounting niggles. All mounting should be done at boot time, with a nice simple GUI menu to change preferences related to permissions and what should and should not be mounting when and by whom.

Inspired by this article at Linux.com.

Edit: This isn't a "Windows niggles" thread, as we may well crash the forum server with that. Try and stick to Linux. And my definition of a "niggle" is something that's annoying but not the end of the world. Some people seem to be defining it as a fundamental world ending problem. The new theme - Though it was planned for 8.04, the plan for a new theme was pushed back to 8.10, the upcoming release. While almost every new version has some visual changes and a new background, this release is supposed to have more radical changes to the theme. The basic color scheme will probably stay, but other than that, who knows? You can see some of the proposed art here.

2. Encrypted “Private” Directory - While many OSs now offer whole hard-drive encryption, most people probably only have a small set of their files that they want to encrypt. Instead of offering an encrypt everything or nothing option, there will be a folder in each user’s home folder called “Private” that will be encrypted. This would be useful to store confidential documents and that sort of thing without slowing down access to less-confidential stuff, like your music. (Full Blueprint)

3. Improved Flash Experience - I thought that being prompted to click next a few times the first time you wanted to see Flash content was a good enough Flash experience, but apparently the Ubuntu developers want it to be even better. I think it is safe to expect absolutely seamless Flash viewing in Intrepid. (Full Blueprint)

4. LiveCD Installer Updates - While the current installer is functional, there are a number of improvements that could be made. The ones I am looking forward to most are the visual representation of partitions and the slideshow introducing new users to Ubuntu while they are waiting for it to install, as I proposed in a Brainstorm idea :-). (Full Blueprint)

5. LiveUSB Creator - Like Fedora has already done, it will become possible to use a GUI utility to create a “LiveUSB” disc. Basically, it will be very easy to install Ubuntu to a flash drive and carry it around. The main advantage of a flash drive over a CD is that you can save changes back to the drive. The PS3 saw the server but none of the files I had shared. A bit more reading showed that the PS3 was pretty fussy about which video files it read. I played around with various GUI and apps but eventually found myself using ffmpeg to encode avi to mpeg1 which worked perfectly (and was pretty fast as well). The only downside is that the games machine cannot seem to handle pause/forward/back etc - but all in all a success; my reputation as "techy-dad" enhanced and a small saving on DVDs as well.

I have read that its entirely possible to install Linux on a partition on the drive which could be handy for hassle free browsing and email so possibly more experimentation (happy tinkering) to come! :D

software for easy driver instalation in ubuntu 8.4

i am just wondering if anyone knows of any software for ubuntu 8.4 that handels driver instalation as i have not been able to install drivers using the read me files that come with the driver also i dont realy want to go into the command line if i can help it

thank you.

Defrag ext2/ext3

I have just had a thought regarding windows and defragging.
