Not keen on the company's principles or more to the point YaST (horrible package manager).

But in general do not want pandering one click online 'stores' and such services, what a waste.

A couple that probably aren't included there, less well known and very worth a look.

SliTaz - tried this, very good ultra lightweight portable distro using Busybox kernel. Just odds are good that some command line work will be required to mount HDD volumes.

Pardus - full featured, independent and newb/casual user friendly distro from Turkey. Much like Ark linux in tone.

FaunOS - though currently discontinued :(, large and comparatively demanding. Arch linux based (but easy), full featured, pacman package manager, tweaked full KDE and trimmings.

RE: Linux Distribution Chooser

Kubuntu ftw.

Though my computer supports it, I use Ubuntu.

RE: Linux Distribution Chooser

OpenSuse is really quite good for people new to Linux, it was the first distro I properly started using. Just in case they had moved the page, I also went to the main page at http://www.zegeniestudios.net and clicked the Linux distro chooser link from the menu bar. Unfortunately this yielded the same result. I'd advise that this pinned thread be temporarily taken down until zegeniestudios fix their site, so forumites don't waste their time. It could be put back up when they have the service working again.

Many Thanks John

RE: Linux Distribution Chooser

This is what i get when i try to visit ;-;

kind of a shame i can't access the page =/ As I would have loved to have taken it~

I want to switch to linux/use it as often as i use windows, but i've never really had great success with finding the right distro.
Although~ i've always found Fedora to be rather fun \^^/ Which is what i have installed now.

RE: Linux Distribution Chooser

It told me ubuntu, so I installed 6.06 and dist upgraded to 7.04.

working perfectly and less than 4 weeks til 7.10.

But I'm not going to early upgrade, as they screwed up the rt2500 drivers in April, and network manager was flawed.

RE: Linux Distribution Chooser

It gave me Ubuntu.

Since I run Simply Mephis I guess it got it right.

I occasionally think about "upgrading" to RH4 - dont think I ever will tho, Im way too lazy.

RE: Linux Distribution Chooser

Interesting. In my opinion that's a rather odd complaint as I've never seen a distribution that doesn't require some Linux knowledge, they all have a learning curve.

I find it hard to see how PCLinuxOS is less beginner friendly than Ubuntu. One of the things that initially endeared it to me was that unlike Ubuntu I didn't need to edit Xorg.conf to configure my monitor and set a decent refresh rate. Of course that's not a bid deal, but it actually made the PCLinuxOS live CD usable without installation to my hard drive, while using the Ubuntu live CD gave me a headache with its fixed 60hz refresh rate. I imagine even that simple config file editing would be quite daunting and off-putting to some Mac/Windows users who expect a GUI to configure that kind of thing.

In my experience there are a lot of other little things that need tweaking in Ubuntu which just work in PClinuxOS, but of course that depends on the issues with your particular configuration.

My advice to a Linux newbie would be to try a few different popular distributions rather than going by this kind of chooser.

RE: Linux Distribution Chooser
The ‘test’ is marginally helpful.
Hey, I'd put it at a lot better than that. I had a little fun out of using it myself, but the main use I see for it is to direct newbies at, to slow down the "Which is the best Distro? Which is the best Distro?" noise that you sometimes get.

Know one guy who intermittently turned up to our LUG meeting, he'd ask which is the best distro, go away intending to try whatever was flavour of the month that month, and before he got round to trying it, say on average ~6 weeks, he'd get a new reccomendation of a distro he hadn't previously heard of, maybe from the LUG, maybe from the local Uni (or maybe a new release of one he already had). So what did he do? Well download that one, and repeat the cycle.

Not sure over 18 months he actually installed/tried to install much, but he got a good CD collection. At least this way he'd only have had two or three to vaccilate between!

RE: Linux Distribution Chooser
Which one is easier Kubuntu or Ubuntu?
Ubuntu. There are just SO many distros to choose from that at the end of the test, the individual is probably going to choose for themselves anyway. There are a number of distros aimed at newbies that aim to ‘just work’ so this comes as no surprise.

The test is useful in eliminating a large number of distros from the choice, but again, it’s all down to personal preference – which is what Linux is all about.

Lots of fun though :D

Cheers,

Macca
RE: Linux Distribution Chooser

Fedora Core came up for me which is exactly what I am running.
