CRT phosphors can provide truer, brighter colours but flat panels are getting better, the best still being made in the Sharp plant, so you may need to 'bite the bullet' at some stage.
If you have the NVidia X Settings capability under System, Administration, you can use its X Server Display Configuration to see whether the driver is detecting your display correctly and providing a resolution change capability that you can try. If it's not installed, Applications Add/Remove (all available applications) should have it under System Tools. It seems to be better than System, Preferences, Screen Resolution for detecting and changing display resolutions.
Of course it could still be the graphics card, which according to http://www.ubuntuhcl.org/ was last checked against Ubuntu 7.10, so perhaps you could try a different card ?
Finding a graphics card and drivers that works well across OSs can be difficult, but at least you aren't then stuck with limited capability generic VESA drivers. (Although you could try that at 1024x768 for your rig.) Trouble is, if you don't have Linux-friendly partition imaging software, trying all this out can involve time consuming re-installation, admittedly easier than for XP. Don't you just love 'messing about in computers' to mis-quote Kenneth Grahame. :w00t:

RE: Ubuntu screen resolution

Hi Bruce

I use a CRT on all my computers with a 1024X768 resolution which I like. The best that I can get from Ubuntu is 800X600 which is not ideal, but at lest I can see the whole desktop.

Any ideas how I can get it to my preferred resolution.

Fuzzy-Felt Bloke :):)

RE: Ubuntu screen resolution

That's good news Fuzzy-Felt Bloke !

Meanwhile I've been experimenting with different displays on my [B] rig, to find that the 8.04.1 LiveCD refused to install for a different display, but it then worked with the 8.04.1 LiveDVD.

So, out of curiousity, what was the native resolution of your display and what resolution did you actually set up ?

RE: Ubuntu screen resolution

Just messed about with 'Recovery Mode' from startup and altered dpkg. Of course it may be a case that there's no tie-up between the driver and the display itself. (It would be more encouraging if it was at least defaulting to 800x600.) Perhaps you are using an unusual display ?
You could try EnvyNG, but that's supposed to be for even later cards. and messes up my [C] rig ATI card and doesn't yet help my [A] and [B] rigs which still seem to do better with the driver that you are using. ;)

RE: Ubuntu screen resolution

Could you tell us the native/intended resolution and refresh rate? You can try 'forcing' an Update by way of System, Administration, Update Manager, Check. ;)
Please let us know if this helps. :D

RE: Ubuntu screen resolution

Have you set the screen resolution up in system/Administration/Nvidia xserver settings?:)

Ubuntu screen resolution

I'm hoping someone can point me in the right direction.
I have GeForce 7300 card in a ASUS A8V-VM SE motherboard running Ubuntu 8.04, the problem is my screen resolution at best is 640X480 @ 50Hz.
