Thanks to both Arochester and Bruce R for their help.

Burned a new Puppy Linux CD, and stick drive. got nowhere with either, they do test OK on other machines. Time to get the screwdrivers out I suppose, hopefully its just a dodgy lead.

Hi idunno :)
Please note that I'm not a Linux CLI expert, just an enthusiastic Graphical User Interface or Menu user, but I have been 'scratching my head' trying to figure what's happened to your son's Ubuntu installation and have concluded that it's probably not on to restore Ubuntu 7.10 as it was, as it now uses subtly different packages (applications) and a different Linux kernel, all spun off from the development of the next, Ubuntu version, now actually a tidier 8.04.1 version.

A couple of months ago, during that development, a lot of Hardware Abstraction Layer problems were being reported, but with 8.04.1's new 2.6.24-19-generic kernel, such bug reports seem to have faded away. 8.04.1 is very similar to 7.10, so it might just be easier to do a fresh install of 8.04.1, but what 'packages' was your son using, can he remember ?

I tried following MrJokester's instructions.
It told me that I must run "dpkg --configure manually -a" first to correct a problem before i could start the reinstall.

So I have typed in
sudo dpkg --configue - a

And off it went, now its hanging on :-
Generating locales...
en_AU.UTF-8...

Which I have googled, and am now plowing through, anyone know any workarounds?

Sometime ago, my Son decided to install Gutsy Gibbon (he thinks!) on his laptop - a HP Pavilion dv 8000 , and no he didn't do any backups etc before he started.
Unfortunately the install has now gone belly up, it had worked quite well for about a year. Which means that it gets given back to "Good old Dad" to try and fix.
So I have a feeling that this will be the first of several questions, as I have no idea about Linux - but happen to use the same forum as several guys who do!
I have managed to get it to run Gnome in safe mode, and it says.

Internal error.
failed to initialiaze HAL!

It is not speaking to its USB ports or its optical drive at the moment, but the ports do seem to be functioning as he can still charge his phone through them, and the working light on a stick drive does come on when one is inserted.

So I am clueless, any ideas?
