As my [C] rig had just started playing up with Updated 8.04, I've just done the same, using the 32-bit LiveDVD and alls well, touch wood. ;)

RE: Ubuntu resolution again...

HH 8.04.1 installed with my desired resolution and full eye candy. On one rig, the CD install stalled, whilst the slower DVD install worked.
(Note that although six-monthly release 8.10, Intrepid Ibex development is getting under way, there's talk of an 8.04.2 Long Term Support Jan 2009 release.)
The '8.04' (actually 8.04.1) Live CD can be downloaded from the usual Mirrors. but if you fancy an 'overnight', the Live DVDs (32-bit or 64-bit) can be found at :
http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/hardy/release/

RE: Ubuntu resolution again...

Thanks Bruce. I didn't realise I had installed such an old version. I'll try HH and see if it improves. :)

RE: Ubuntu resolution again...

Edit, don't know how, but a double Post occurred, so have deleted content in this one !

RE: Ubuntu resolution again...

Ok...I'm running Feisty! (Doesn't work on my old [C] rig, so its probably time that I went off-line for a few days, to re-instate and check out my HD2600PRO card on my rig.)
(I have found that it takes three or four weeks for new ATI release Linux drivers to filter through to Envy, so I won't be rushing to do it.) ;)

RE: Ubuntu resolution again...

I have edited it so it looks like this but it does not give me the options for my desired res. :(

Section "Monitor"
Identifier	"Generic Monitor"
Option "DPMS"
HorizSync	28-51
VertRefresh	43-60
EndSection

Section "Screen"
Identifier	"Default Screen"
Device "ATI Technologies Inc ATI Default Card"
Monitor "Generic Monitor"
DefaultDepth	24
SubSection "Display"
Depth 24
Modes "1280x1024" "1024x768"
EndSubSection
EndSection

RE: Ubuntu resolution again...
-Wiz!- (22/07/2008)
Put Ubuntu HH on the rig in the sig. Maybe you just opened xorg.conf normally. You have to open a terminal and do 'sudo gedit /etc/X11/xorg.conf' in order to edit it as root. Then add all the supported modes to xorg.conf and delete all the ones you'll don't want.

Ubuntu resolution again...

Put Ubuntu HH on the rig in the sig.
