(personally I think that for home users too).
Slow, unfriendly and inflexible. I had a spare SATA 80gig and 2 gig of generic DDR RAM. It was too much bother to install XP so I installed HH 8.04 64bit.
Today I went over to see her and install some plugins.
"Dad" she said " that computer is much better than the old one with Window$ on it".
Sums it up really.:D:D
RE: My attempt to Use Linux as my main OS

Thanks everyone for the warm welcome.

Its been a busy week for me with work and today is the first chance I have had to sit in-front of my own pc.
Everything seems to be running well with my Ubuntu setup and as yet I haven't had any reason to need Windows.

I decided on Evolution because of the calendar and contacts and the Exchange link. I will have a perusal at thunderbird
and let you know how I get on.

Firefox crashed on me a few times when I was browsing my audible.co.uk account, I clicked a link to an audio book description
and firefox vanished. Other than that its been running smoothly.

Thanks

Austin

RE: My attempt to Use Linux as my main OS

we use evolution at work, simply because of the Exchange connector.

RE: My attempt to Use Linux as my main OS

Welcome aboard Austin :D

RE: My attempt to Use Linux as my main OS

Thunderbird here, Evolution is something of a pet hate for me and is uninstalled almost immediately on a any of my Ubuntu setup's.

RE: My attempt to Use Linux as my main OS

Welcome to the Forums

Interesting that you opted for Evolution as your email application, I wonder what everyone else is using?

I'm using Mozilla Thunderbird at present, so there's one vote for that.

What are the rest of you using?

RE: My attempt to Use Linux as my main OS

Welcome.
Although I use (and support) Windows at work, alongside Linux and Mac, My home is a Linux zone only..4 PCs, wife's OpenSuse 10.2 (she won't let me upddate it), mine OpenSuse 11.0, HTPC Mythbuntu 8.04.1, and test rig, - a constantly changing mixture.

Good luck, and remember that Linux is not Windows.

RE: My attempt to Use Linux as my main OS

Welcome. :)

RE: My attempt to Use Linux as my main OS

Welcome to the forums! :D

As the others have said if you need any help just ask.

RE: My attempt to Use Linux as my main OS
Bruce R (03/08/2008)
..you may choose to 'jazz it up a little' like other forum member's signatures and avatars.
I don't condone that at all Bruce and it should be frowned upon.. ahem :P

Welcome to the forum Austin. BigDaddy's signature is a far better example than mine, but you may choose to 'jazz it up a little' like other forum member's signatures and avatars. :)

Meanwhile file format conversion is one of the ills of modern information technology, but Linux software with Win32 counterparts may help, like OpenOffice, the GIMP and Thunderbird, but some Linux software is simply different or even better, with less overhead. I prefer Ubuntu 8.04.1's and LinuxMint5's Evince to Acrobat Reader for example, just double-click on a PDF to see it in action. So Have Fun ! :w00t:

RE: My attempt to Use Linux as my main OS

Welcome to the madhouse.:D:D
You will be given as much help as you require here. I thought it was time to give it another go.

I have setup a blog : http://xp-2-linux.blogspot.com/
I set this up to share my experience with others and also as a kind of note pad for myself if I need to refer back to anything
in the future.

Primarily due to the coverage and help in Micromart I decided on Ubuntu and hope if I get stuck you can all help :)

Thanks
Austin
