After using my spare HH 8.04.1 drive several times I have just replaced it with my original reinstalled drive. Everything went like clock work, so I may not have to ponce about with sorting out Grub.:D
Thank you all who helped me.:D:D

RE: The old chap has done a stupid thing.

I realised that most of my data was backed up to my USB pen drive, so things are not as bad they seem.:)
Is it possible to copy the boot information from the working system to the duff one? I thought of using using a USB drive and Live CD.
It will all have to wait until much later, as I will be playing out in the garage with my nice shiny new toy all morning and I have to take Tilly Mint shopping this afternoon, as her friend no longer has a car.

RE: The old chap has done a stupid thing.

Hi bigdaddy :)
Sounds like a problem that I used to have with my [A] rig triple boot when using Ubuntu Manual install. I soon learned that I needed to delete the existing partition and its installation, and then re-create and define a new installation with the Partition Installer.
It's now become second nature every time that I thus use its automatic drive scan and multi-boot GRUB menu installation.
I hope that this advice helps. ;)

RE: The old chap has done a stupid thing.
bigdaddy (03/10/2008)
I didn't want to lose the last five years accounts by jumping in with both feet.:)
5 years of accounts with no back up?:Wow:

How many articles have there been about backing stuff up.;)
Back mine up after every update to my records.(Only after losing 3 months work due to major crash.;) )

Edit
If you have a separate home partition you could reinstall without formating it.

RE: The old chap has done a stupid thing.

Have you tried turning it off and on again? :hehe:

RE: The old chap has done a stupid thing.

Thanks but all I could get is the wallpaper, nowt else. Totally unable to access anything in Gnome. After using the live CD to copy my important files I reinstalled. Big mistake it seems to have screwed the bootloader completely. It left me unable to access neither Vi$ta nor XP.
Fortunately I had an old drive with HH 8.04.1 installed and that enabled me to access Vi$ta which I am now using to type this. I think I need to try to sort out the Grub on the main Ubuntu drive.

RE: The old chap has done a stupid thing.

If you are sure that it was uninstalling evo that did it, try

sudo apt-get -install evolution

RE: The old chap has done a stupid thing.

Trouble is that evo is quite locked into gnome, you may have removed a dependency for gnome.
RE: The old chap has done a stupid thing.

Thanks chaps, I have managed to recover my household accounts using the Live CD, so I will now try some more options. The logon sound and my wall paper are OK, but other than that the screen is blank.
I have tried all the repair options in Grub to no avail. Is there a way of recovering my setup without a reinstall?
