If they had just made the background silver instead of black they could have used it to solar power the search engine.

It's true. If you stand in a darkened room your lcd screen still gives off light even when the screen is black. Compare black screen to turned off and see!

TFTs/LCDs use the same amount of power at any color. Plus, it's not as pretty as Google :P

Isn't the backlight on most lappies still CCFL? The entire background is still illuminated regardless of whether it's black or white. :)

It must save the battery life on laptops. If LCD's share anything with LED's then black takes less power. :)
