How much did temps drop when you reversed the fan?

Re HSF ,Ebuyer do a Cooler Master CP5 6J..... (etc) ,has a copper base & is rated upto XP3000.It only costs about £7 ,that would be a cheap & worthy upgrade.....unless your willing to spend £30 on a big all copper HSF

The case fan is top rear and was blowing in, now blowing out.

the fan on the heatsink is a tsunami and rated up to 2200+xp, but in my opinion it could be bigger as it does not cover the heatsink

All I can say is contacts, ive got 1.8A, 2.2M, and 2.53 all ES chips at the mo......they belong to Intel forever though and I cant sell them! I got the P4M as the 800FSB P4's are dealyed until at least the end of April, when they come out I fancy a 2.8 or 3.2 800FSB chip....
U are right, I've ordered some new RAM today, but at £100 for 256MB PC3500 Corsair XMS Platinum I decided to give that a miss! Instead I have bought some Twinmos DDR400 which is reputed to be good, I got it for £40 from www.xcase.co.uk along with a new 550w PSU
Im hoping if I add some heatspreaders (£4.00 from coolermaster) and dedicated fans (Ill bodge something up) to the memory it will hold out for at least DDR450.....

Btw sounds like you need the top grade Corsair XMS RAM ,expensive stuff!

New project for me - Pentium 4 2.2 Mobile Engineering Sample, check this out for a high FSB....Im playing with the Athlon boys here! I am running a stock Intel HSF as no others will make contact with the core of the CPU as there is no IHS on this chip. Im getting new memory soon to try CAS2, but really I need a board that is capable of 250FSB for DDR500 and 3ghz....coming soon!

ok ,a few questions

The rear most PSU fan should be exhausting air ,check that it is (very likely it is with a twin fan unit )Use a piece of paper to check

About the case fan ,you didn't say where it is ,if its at the top of the rear panel you have it blowing the wrong way!
Hot air from all the devices will rise in the case ,you want all this hot expelled not just blown around.
With both the PSU & top case fan exhausting air there will be good air flow through the case ,plenty of cool air will be drawn in at the front lower part of the case.

If the fan you mentioned is at the lower front of the case you have it blowing the right direction but it isn't the most efficient setup.Move it to the top rear of the case & have it expelling air ,that should lower your case temps a few degrees more.

Btw what make & model HSF do you have on the HSF?
You have your CPU o/ced nearly to the level of an XP2100 ,that's rather close to the HSF limits

Forgot to say ,if those suggestions bring your case temps down to the mid to low 30's then you probably won't need anymore fans

The six fans i have are one on the chip rated at 2200+xp

one case fan,(blowing in at the chip)
one motherboard fan
two fans in the 450w psu
and one on the graphics card

do i really need more it already sounds like an airplane

I've now got the XP1700 Tbred B, overclocked to 1.9GHz ,it would probably go higher but I've run out of mulitpliers & I can't up the FSB anymore with the RAM at CAS2.
I'll get more out of it when I get a new mbrd

57C is a bit on the hot side ,probably due to your highish case temp ,how many case fans have you got?
What HSF has your cpu got?

I wouldn't worry about running your HDD at ATA133 ,you won't notice any real world differences ,though it would benchmark a little higher

If you're bothered about running the HDD at ATA100 you can probably get a Promise ATA 133 controller card to fit a spare PCI slot.

How hot is o.k. for an 1800+xp chip and kg7 system ???

overclocked @1703mhz

chip currently running at 57c

System at 39c

(things got much hotter after fitting new 60gig ata133mhz 7200rpm hard disk and i have fitted a new case fan but still worried about temp)

on the subject of the ata133, my m/board runs it at 100 is there any way around this to get it up to 133 ???

Btw I managed to unlock my XP1600 & its now running at 1.77GHz (12x147,1.8v).
I'm going to lower it to 11.5x152MHz=1.75GHz though as that is actually slightly faster for SETI & it runs cooler at that speed ,especially as I can lower the vcore to 1.775v.Now I just gotta get that damn 11.5x muliplier to work!........

I've just ordered an XP1700 T'bred & I'm hoping to get over 2GHz with that!

I got an 850 Duron upto 1017Mhz, and a 1400MHZ 1515 Mhz on a Soltek SL75DRV, but I did have to remove my soundcard ( Creative Audigy 5.1) as it kept falling over with it in as I had to adjust the FSB as well as the multiplier.
It seemed fairly stable but stepped back a bit because of the heat and noise with the ewxtra fans

Just a quickie, ramped my FSP to 142 from 133, and now my Athlon XP2000+ is running at 1846Mhz....that made my MadOnion2001 score leap a bit, I can tell you! upto 9800ish now...just can`t reach that golden 5 figure point (until I get an XP unlocking kit

Weird, it is a 256MB stick of PC133 - could be generic, bought it second hand from a chap within these very pages.

Re SPD ,I asume thats refers to RAM? ,in which case its Serial Presence Detect ,it relates to a chip on the RAM stick that idenitifies its speed & latency timings.I don't see why that should lock your PC up unless you have an old RAM stick with no SPD

Just o/clocked a Celeron 700 to 1050 (by mistake actually, 100 x 10.5 reaher than 66 x 10.5).

Anybody know what function spd has in the bios? (The manual that came with my board is rubbish, but then is cost me £30 inc vat, so I can't really whinge). Assume it is speed, but if I enable it the PC won't boot, need to wipe the CMOS to get in again.

Anyway, hope someone can help.

Well, my last chip was an Athlon T-bird 1333 running at 1468 with the L1 Bridges unlocked, and an 11x multiplier...I have since changed to an XP2000+, as yet unlocked, but my old unlocked, processor, and HSF are both on an eBay auction here; http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=2303137461&category=15919 if you want it, it`s a nice, stable chip, and runs at a nice cool temp (for a T-bird..) oh, theres no reserve...

Looks like you have generic RAM ,still 146MHz from that isn't bad ,anyway your HDD is preventing you from go higher

There's no way that altering the multiplier will wipe your HDD! ,like I said unless you have UNLOCKED the multipliers on your CPU changing the multipliers in the bios will have NO effect.
Maybe I just misunderstood you?

re 150MHz FSB ,are you saying that you went from 146 FSB to 150MHz & that caused data corruption?(btw you should of gone up in the smallest steps possible).
That's a syptom of a PCI/IDE bus too high for the HDD.But the PCI bus is only slightly over spec at 37.5MHz at 150FSB! .Damn! ,I guess that HDD can't handle much then! ,its not an old Maxtor is it?.
Btw its extremely rare for that to happen at that PCI bus speed ,you know your limit now & its held back by the HDD!.
Glad to hear you've got it sorted out,my bad for not warning you of that remote chance! .No permanent damaged is caused by that anyway.

Re the RAM ,you need to pop the cover off & read the stickers on the modules or read the chips on the modules themselves.
Though Mother Board Monitor does have an addon program which can read some RAM modules

How do find out what the ram is (generic or crucial)

also after your last message i tryed putting the multi. back down to 11.5 and uped the fsb to 150
this totaly crashed my system, killed off all the drivers (m/board,modem,display,ETC.), after reinstalling all the drivers i still could not get my mouse pointer back (o.k. in safe mode).

I ended up re-formatting the hard drive and re-installing everything, OK at the moment cos i'm just playing with it as i'm still waiting on my new hard drive.

And by the way the scsi hard drive i'm getting is only costing me £50 from an auction on QXL.

If you haven't unlocked the multipliers then changing them in the bios won't make any difference on your mbrd ,it'll stay at x11.5.

Yeah just keep upping the FBS until its unstable ,I wouldn't exceed 155MHz though to be on the safe side (re PCI bus).

Re your RAM ,if its Generic RAM it probably won't go much over 140MHz ,Crucial RAM can go upto 160MHz!

Btw why are you bothering with a much more expensive SCSI drive when you could get a cheaper bigger IDE drive?

Your multiplier setting doesn't make sense ,the default multiplier for an XP1800 is x11.5.A typo?

What spec DDR RAM have you got?

Anyway ,to increase cpu MHz just keep upping the FSB in small steps until its unstable & then back it off a few MHz.
I've no idea how high you can go this depends on your RAM & your AMD760 chipset as well as the CPU.Give it a go
1 thing though ,you don't want your PCI bus going to high ,if I were you I'd stop at 155MHz FSB (assuming your mbrd goes that high).

If you've already reached your FSB limit then you need to unlock your cpu which isn't easy!.If you want to give that a go then lmk.
Btw do you have the option of changing the multipliers in the bios or via dipswitches?

The XP1600 is an AGOIA ,don't know more than that offhand.
I havent actually found its limit yet ,my bridges keep failing
