Ensuring that your case fans are up to the job is a wise move too. The Pentium D CPUs are hot-running beasties at the best of times and run unbelievably hot when you overclock them. I doubt if it'll keep up with your boy's rig in terms of performance, but it should get satisfyingly close with enough tweaking.

As you say, it's great fun to play with because it's yours. Keep us updated, and above all, enjoy! ;)

Cheers, Slipstreem.

RE: overclocking a pentium D

Thanks Slipstreem, Im enjoying overclocking my rig more than my boys due to the fact that its mine(my boy aint spent a bean on his though, muggins ere has) and the cpu/mobo are cheap and sort of expendable unlike my boys rig. Im not going to take it higher until i get some arctic silver, Ive used mine up and im lumbered with Startech paste which im not impressed with, Ive also got an issue with the rear fan in my coolermaster 330, I cant work out if its blowing in or out(I need a front fan as well) and im worried about my fan orientation( its placed to blow air out the back in the direction the rear fan is blowing, If it is blowing out the back!)

But rest assured, As soon as i get these sundries i will go for 4Ghz. Your right about google, Ive been scouting it for a while for D915 info and it seems to hit 4Ghz quite commonly.

warm regards

RE: overclocking a pentium D

Nice going Mog! ;)

I see that you have the Akasa AK965 HSF on your beasty. I'm sure you can get close to 4GHz if you happen to have a good D915. You may need to go up to 1.35Volts for Vcore though. I've had a look on Google and plenty of people have gone that far without frying anything. It's up to you obviously, but it would be great to see it hit the magic 4GHz, even if just for a quick SuperPi test. :)

Cheers, Slipstreem.

RE: overclocking a pentium D

Hello, After a bit of hard restarting i finally got 3.6ghz from my trusty hothouse D915, I had to raise the vcore to 1.33.75 in bios to make it sort of stable(10 min in orthos stable).

I have no doubt that it will go faster, Im glad this chip has a FSB of 800, my memory will always be underclocked.:P

warm regards

RE: overclocking a pentium D

Yep. You have the safeguards in place so there's no harm in pushing it further.

Regarding the X1900XT, I'm not surprised it won't go any further. You were very lucky to get it as far as 650MHz. That's the fastest the RV580 GPU was ever intended to run, AFAIK. No amount of additional cooling or tweaking is going to get it any further unless you want to physically volt-mod the card. I wouldn't go there personally.

Try the ATT tweaks in the sticky linked to under my sig to pick up a few FPS if you haven't already. :)

Cheers, Slipstreem.

RE: overclocking a pentium D

Both enabled, They are settings i believe should be left well alone.
warm regards.( any tips on ocing an x1900xt?, artifacted @ 650/1550)

RE: overclocking a pentium D

If the BIOS settings are similar to those on an ASUS P5K, look on the Advanced tab for "CPU TM Function" and "C1E Support". Enable them both if they aren't already enabled. The latter may not be available for a Pentium D, but don't worry if it isn't. When im in windows its stable at 3.2 from 2.8 but im concerned that this new phenomenon is going to hurt my rig.

I have a 600w psu which powered a more power hungry rig a while ago, I have set the PCIE freq at 100, PCI freq at 33.3 and the NB/SB/FSB termination voltages at auto, Im concerned about these settings as they go up in large increments and earlier i tried NB 1.25v/ FSB 1.2v and left the SB at auto, On some forums 1.5v was set for this but in my settings anything over 1.4v is highlighted in red. Could it be the mobo voltages? or am i looking in the wrong direction, Any ideas?

My memory @ 230 FSB is running at 460mhz, far below its rated speed(667) so it cant be this.

warm regards
