Now there are a couple of issues straight off- firstly I've rolled back the bios to version 0608 as this is the only one that is any good for o/cing the quads.
I'm now running 2 executions of dual core orthos with processor affinities set. timings have been slackened right down for ram, its running at its rated 800MHz timings at 667MHz, fsb speed 333MHz unlinked.
It boots. not stable- increase Vcore from auto to 1.313
orthos runs for 43mins and then rounding error
I then increase vcore again- and its now bluescreening 5-10 minutes in. i reduce vcore, increase vram from auto to 1.92. same as before. reduce vram, increase vNB from auto to 1.38, same as before.
I set everything back to auto, Vcore up quite a bit (to 1.350V) POST but no boot. reduce to 1.33, and it boots, currently running 24mins in stable so far.

my question- I'm using small FFTs (most stress on cpu) - what is the most likely candidate for the bluescreens? I'm guessing not enough Vcore is the most likely explaination of rounding errors. single core temps are showing a max of 65C, motherboard at 46C. and my quad is a B3 stepping, not the less power hungry G0. any ideas?

RE: Q6600 overclock

It is noisy but not noisier than the sound of gun fire!!! :D

RE: Q6600 overclock

thinking new build :-) not sure about those tiny fans though got used to 120's now :-)

RE: Q6600 overclock

Here's a silver one, from Aria : http://tinyurl.com/6gxb6b
Or here's a wider selection of cube cases, including the black Thermaltake :
http://www.xcase.co.uk/c/118781/1/cube-cases.html

RE: Q6600 overclock

woah!!! yum yum ... one sweet ride

MrG

RE: Q6600 overclock
Mr Green (18/07/2008)

-Wiz!- (14/07/2008)
Very impressive. :)
Whats that in your sig? can you post a link to a larger shot.... please [totally off topic!!!!]

MrG
here we go -

http://www.thermaltake.com/product/Chassis/miniCase/lanbox/vf1000bws.asp

RE: Q6600 overclock

overclock even lol.... thanks

RE: Q6600 overclock

...
Mr Green (27/06/2008)
Can you overclpck laptops? lol
Here is one

http://www.cclonline.com/product-info.asp?product_id=17739&category_id=383&manufacturer_id=0

RE: Q6600 overclock

It''s his new handbag.:P

RE: Q6600 overclock
-Wiz!- (14/07/2008)
Very impressive. :)
Whats that in your sig? can you post a link to a larger shot.... please [totally off topic!!!!]

MrG

RE: Q6600 overclock
Bruce R (15/07/2008)
Hi Mr Green :)
Sorry, had assumed from your temperature colour references that you were already using Linux 'sensors'. In Terminal, keep entering sensors and you will get prompted for sudo installation and repetitive sensor scanning, which will all spring into life after a Restart, only then responding to the sensor command with a text display. If you then use Synaptic to search for sensors and install sensors-applet and libsensors, the 'Add To Panel' will then offer a simple graphical display, whose 'Preferences' allows the colour threshold adjustments that I referred to, and so it's better (and more fun) than minimised CoreTemp plus SpeedFan in WinXP. I hope that you find this useful for your Quad. :D
Loaded sensor applet got a lot of info on my panel now :-) will try running fsb up again now I can watch those temps

Thanks

MrG

RE: Q6600 overclock

well I am using lm-sensors but not sensor-applet so will try it out thanks for that :-)

you do learn something new every day ....

thanks

MrG

RE: Q6600 overclock

Hi Mr Green :)
Sorry, had assumed from your temperature colour references that you were already using Linux 'sensors'. Most overclockers working on a normal person's budget go for a CPU with a high multiplier then it doesn't really matter much which motherboard you put it in, as long as the BIOS is tweakable.

A C2D with a multiplier of x10 will get very close to 3GHz in a budget ASRock mobo (~£45?) and that's pretty much as far as most people seem comfortable to go 24/7 if they don't want to end up with a rig that sounds like a hovercraft anyway. :)

Cheers, Slipstreem.

RE: Q6600 overclock

Cool. For 24/7 use though a more subtle voltage maybe in order. As you say if it's stable at 3.6GHz then slowly take voltages down until you find instability and then nudge them back up. :)

RE: Q6600 overclock

Right

NB is set at 1.425 [ 1.6 is Max]

SB is set at 1.7 [1.7 is Max!!!]

SB C P 1.05

Maybe [not tried yet!] try decreasing NB & SB see if it still boots... as I have upped Cpu to 1.4v

I'm itching to push to 3.7 rofl......

Really am out of my depth, read so many posts threads forums but its more to do with mobo, setup, cpu, cooler etc.....

Most reviews do not rate MSI boards as good clockers ......

MrG
