Would you guys say that 8 hours is long enough for orthos to test the CPU? I ask because this lower voltage is still working (it'll 4 hours at 2200) and it's quite likely I'll be up till about 2am, making 8 hours total (maths pro :P)

If it's ok then I'll take it down what'll probably be the final time and then obviously by the time I wake up that'll have been tested. Am I kinda lucky that my chip is stable on 1.38v @3Ghz when as herr mog said, it takes most E2180's 1.40-1.41V?

Sorry to keep dragging this thread on btw guys. Although work kinda took the buzz away...

Orthos ran for a total of about 11 hours and every thing seems fine. Currently orthos is now running with a slightly lower voltage and I'll see how that goes. Been running gromacs for 5 minutes now and the cores are 2C lower than the previous voltage. :D 50C!

What's the difference between CPU and the cores though? The CPU is 44C yet Cores 0 and 1 are 50C. Aren't they all the same thing, the cores being in the CPU right?

8 minutes, cores are now 51C if all goes well we can start messing with memory timings right guys? :P

Edit - Forgot to add, I clocked the 9600GT a bit higher at 740/1010 I don't really want to push it right up to what PCFormat got it to (792/1100).

Edit 2 - Orthos ran for about 18 minutes and then just crashed. All other programs worked but orthos wouldn't respond. I reset the computer and ran it again, so far we're a 1 hour 10. Cores 53 and 52. There are two heatsinks on my mobo, one orange one saying asrock and a larger silver one, which I believe is the northbridge one, what temps can it handle/is there a sensor which reports it's temperature? It's the only thing in my case which is so hot I can't keep my fingers on it for more than a few seconds. It probably doesn't matter though. :P

RE: Help me overclock my rig

I prefer to be called Katie while in the forum...:ermm: :hehe:

RE: Help me overclock my rig

"I have my air bag deployed all the time for extra comfort/safety"

wiz finally lets it slip that he is really Jordan.

RE: Help me overclock my rig

Not sure why it's cooler. The CPU cores are about 6 degrees cooler at 52C each, doesn't this mean it's getting stressed less even though the usage is still 100%? CPUZ says core voltage is 1.312-1.320 it keeps occasionally fluxuating between the two although when doing nothing it says its 1.360. I stopped the test just to make sure the BIOS was correct (safe than sorry). It's now running the gromacs test. Hopefully for at least 9 hours, or at least long enough for my rush. You kept refereing to speedstep which is quite different from Thermal Throttling which is what you really meant.

Speedstep just reduces cpu speed when it isn't needed. Thermal Throttling is different and provides overheating protection. Yep, I know you know that really, wiz, but I've explained it for Daniel's benefit.

Cheers,
vfm

RE: Help me overclock my rig

I left mine all night once, The buzz you get from an error free orthos session is like scoring a goal or seeing a pleasant looking lady smiling at you.

Its a good sign so far, I always run core temps and minimize it so that i can see the temps in my task bar for extra piece of mind. If you remember I suggested that you enable Thermal Throttling and I presume you did. That means that if temps were too high the cpu is automatically throtlled back. Truly do not worry.

TBH I should have initially suggested a higher voltage anyway because most mobo's suffer vdroop. My own 650i mobo runs a C2D at 1.4v but underload droops to 1.36v. Take a look at CPUZ on your own machine and see what voltage that is saying the chip is getting while Orthos is running. I suspect it is 1.37v or lower. Actually it would be good if you could post it here then we'll have some idea of that boards vdroop for future reference.

Cheers,
vfm
RE: Help me overclock my rig

I prefer Gromacs as it hammers the cpu. This'll probably be my last post for a couple of hours now while I try and get everything run as best I can.

Btw wiz, to check the voltage when logged in I'm using the Asrock overclocking thing that came with the mobo. :P

Edit - Mog, just seen your posts. I ran memtest and didn't get any errors. So moggie, you're suggesting keeping the timing at 5-5-5-15 for now? Should I start lowering the FSB a few Mhz at a time as well as messing with the voltage until orthos works? The voltage atm is 1.35625 is there a limit I really shouldn't go above? I've seen on some forums guys putting the voltage up to about 1.42 to do 3Ghz.

Edit - Just raised voltage to 1.38750, orthos has been running for 9 mins so far, hopefully this might be the one. The memory timings to change for now would be CAS(5)-tRCD(5)-tRP(5)-tRAS(15) and leave the rest as they are or on auto, The ram timings your running now are very good, The reason i suggest changing them is to make it less stressfull on the ram so that your overclock instability can be narrowed down to either chipset or cpu voltage, The timings can be changed when you have a stable overclock.

Take the vcore up a notch and see what happens, As slipstreem always tells us, ensure that CPU TM is enabled in your bios and you cannot go wrong.

warm regards

Ive been googling vcore on the E2180, 1.40 or 1.41v is common for 3.0Ghz and your temps of 55 degrees during orthos is good, If you can get orthos stable at this vcore for at least a few hours the next step is to lower the vcore until its unstable, Then put it back up the where it last worked.

RE: Help me overclock my rig

SpeedStep is currently on auto. If so yay, if not I'll do a memory test.

RE: Help me overclock my rig

I would double check that speedstep is enabled first. Better safe than sorry. Orthos is the best prog to use. If it is unstable then you need to investigate which area is your weak point. Try running memtest on your memory to check that it is error free. :)

http://www.memtest.org/
