I've calmed down a little now. ;)

Would Wiz mind me asking how these temperatures were measured? Although it's hard to find solid values for Tjmax for any C2D, the E8400 is commonly reported as being 105°C and the E7200 is commonly reported as being 95°C.

If the temperature measuring software used was unaware of this and took the Tjmax of both CPUs as being the same, the E7200 would be reported as running 10°C hotter in relation to the E8400 even if both temperatures were actually identical.

Anything short of running a CPU with thermal-throttling enabled and no HSF will not tell you what the actual Tjmax is. Even then, you won't get an accurate measurement below Tjmax with any of the currently available software due to the highly non-linear characteristics of the temperature sensors inside the C2D which can vary significantly from CPU to CPU even within the same batch.

In short, has anyone managed to find temperature measurements made with an accurately calibrated thermometer placed as close to the CPU as is physically possible for both CPUs by the same person on the same setup? Nothing else is proof of anything.

I'm not setting out to make anyone look stupid. I just want us all to hear the truth. :)

Cheers, Slipstreem.

RE: E7200 Overclocking Thread
Slipstreem (17/09/2008)
It "all kicked off" because you didn't provide any links and went all 'big-girly' when politely asked to do so. More like 1.48v! :(. So my maximum OC was 4.32GHz for Super Pi(e). Not to shabby but no where near stable. It was also flaky at my desired 4.2GHz but thanks to Speccy Joe who pointed me at a simple pencil mod to stop the Vdroop the board can supply a true 1.6v under load.

This turned out to be way to much for my e7200 and the temps rose to 101 degrees!!! :P I thought I had a very bad sample but after some reading it seems the e7XXX do run hot compared to the e8XXX with more cache?

Apparently this is due to two reasons:

1) Due to a smaller die size the IHS cannot dissipate the heat as well as the e8XXX's. (So maybe not crippled e8XXX's?)

2) The e7XXX use thermal paste to attached the cpu die to the IHS where as the more expensive model are soldered to it which gives better cooling.

How true this all is I'm unsure but at least with the 1.6v available the next logical upgrade (Q6600) will get the thrashing it deserves. :) The e7200 is sat happily in the CoolerMaster Stacker at a nippy 4.2GHz for now.

RE: E7200 Overclocking Thread

nah i dont reckon the cpu is holding u back at all, its basically the same as what i got but last season model.

RE: E7200 Overclocking Thread

I think she'll last a long time as my gaming rig.
