However, after reading your description of the site I feel I should correct something very important. Having scammers send you money was something that was done in the early days, but it's now considered a bad idea, and not done anymore. The worry is that scammers will give you money by scamming another person into sending it under false pretences. 419eater has evolved since it originally started, and some "modalities" used back in the early days are frowned upon these days. One of these is the practice of "cash baiting". I hope that clears up what was otherwise an excellent article.

The last paragraph is misleading too. I deal with the victims of romance scammers. Not greedy people, just people looking for love online. We also see scammers use natural disasters, airplane crashes, even charities as the basis for their scam. Can you call someone who donated $1000 to pay for surgery to help repair the face of a a child ravaged by a flesh eating disease greedy? What about those that paid money to help the victims of Hurricane Katrina? There are scams that will ONLY work if the victim is an honest or charitable person. Please don't assume scam victims are greedy. Some people were scammed because they were naive or even because they were honest. Shocking, but true.

Should you require more information, please don't hesitate to contact me.

Mark Pickavance Viacom Vs Google

I read the article Viacom Google by Mark in the latest Micromart.
An excellent view of the current case between them and very well written.
However, one thing that isn't mentioned in the article is the things that viacom wanted to get hold of that the judge didn't allow.
I gave a quick laymans look to the court results and found it very interesting that viacom were trying to get their hands on the backend code for you tube along with the search code. It was claimed that this was needed to find out if youtube were trying hard enough to remove copyright material?
Once you have this it would save a lot of cash if you wanted to set up your own version. Of course Viacom as a respecter of copyright would not do this:laugh: (Sorry couldn't type that with a straight face)
Given that there are a lot of rumours of Viacom sniffing around various social networking sites it does make you wonder.
If I were a cynic I might think that this was a legalized smash and grab raid to get at the code and mess up the competition in the process.
Of course a company such as Viacom would not stoop to such levels.:laugh::laugh:

Another couple of things occurred to me when reading the results.
The first is that viacom asked for all deleted videos from youtube. The judge failed to specify that they could only have copies of their own material. This would mean that if the deleted material contained videos with copyright which did not belong to viacom, then viacom would be committing copyright theft by being in possession of the material. The judge could also be in the frame for facilitating copyright theft.

By asking for and been granted the list of all users instead of all users who accessed viacom copyright material. Both viacom and the judge have left themselves open potential legal actions from those users who did not access the copyright material as this sort of invasion of privacy breaks several laws both in europe and the states.

The fallout from this could get very interesting and given that the Eu is already taking an interest in this case it my be a good idea for the viacom bosses and the judge to postpone any european holidays for the forseeable future.
windows crashing... The review also states that Mandriva no longer offers a free version. Oh really? Well actually it does (minus the codecs) and you can get it herehttp://www.mandriva.com/en/download/free. The latest release is bang up to date and is a quality release and deserves a proper review in your magazine. Yes the price is 69 euros for a boxed release but if your new to linux its a great start as you get a printed manual, 3 months support, and 3 months access to the e-training program. . If you don't need a manual or hard copy CD then a 59 euro yearly subscription gives you the right to download 2 releases per year. BTW did I mention that Cedega is included in the powerpack so that you can play some of your XP games?

Your review was also hard on OpenSuse 10.3, as version 11 is being released this week on 19th June. Sorry to be hard on you but this particular Linux Showdown was a waste of space.

Enjoying the Magazine- But?

:)

I was thumbing through back issues of Micromart and noticed that certain articles types keep appearing - No bad thing given its a weekly magazine and new readers come on board or are attracted by key issues all the time.

But a thought crossed my mind that some were merely skating over the surface and could have been improved by a little more depth. I know its important to strike a balance between newbies and the more experienced.

Take graphic cards last week for example, the article itself was well written and gave the basics of what's available but didn't really say anything that the average reader wouldn't already be familiar with.

I'm all for rebuild or upgrade articles, the more people who do it the better and the effort will pay huge dividends in quality and performance. Mike Pickavance's guides are exceptional, but perhaps he could be persuaded to spend a litte longer on the finer details. For a newcomer its all the little questions, like fitting the I/O shield (what to do with the metal bits covering the interface - how to do a proper grounding job.) Connecting all the auxillary connectors to the front panel. Setting up the BIOS, what to look out for. Easy Peasy when you have done it a few times but fear invoking when its the first time and no immediate help at hand.

The Start/Run feature was great full of little wrinkles and shortcuts to make life easier.

Please don't take this as criticism, just an observation as I think that the majority of Micromart readers know their stuff and could easily handle more technical detail and would appreciate it.

PS An Index of articles in back issues would be greatly received, cut out the time of physically looking things up.

Regards Spritestomper

Windows Crashing

Had this pic for a while, and kept forgetting to post it.

Its a ITBox (game machine) in our local Wetherspoons

Downgrading of MM premises.

A few years back, when I stared taking Micromart regularly instead of once or twice a year to check on the availability and prices of equipment, there used to be a News from Micromart Towers column. Given that freelance writing for magazines isn't the easiest thing to break into, we pride ourselves on making sure we keep looking for new talent, and giving that talent a break.

And we're doing so again. So if you're always fancied writing for a computer magazine, then this is what you need to do:

* Send an e-mail to anthony_enticknap@dennis.co.uk
* In that mail, include a test 400 word article to give us an idea of your writing style
* Tell us a bit about yourself, and your computing experience (but don't worry about being horribly formal or anything like that)
* And that's about it.

The majority of people, as you'd expect, we won't be able to use, but we do read every application we get, and this is a genuine opportunity if writing is your thing. I contacted the seller, asking if he still had the drive, to which I was told that yes it was still in his possession, and was still available.

I asked how he would like to be paid quoting Paypal as an option, he originally asked for a postal order (now I realize why) but then changed his mind and stated he had opened a Paypal account and I could make payment via this.

After making payment I have received no further communication, he furnished me with a hotmail address to make the payment to and this was what I did.

After buying your mag for several years now, and buying several things from the classifieds, normally without any problems whatsoever, I now feel sickened that I have fallen victim to a fraudster or at the least a conman.

What would you suggest I do now?:ermm: I have sent emails to both addresses and even tried to PM him on messenger to no avail, I think the only course open to me now is to contact the police as I have the address that he asked me to send the original postal order to.

I look forward to your advice on the matter, and anyone else that feels could help.

Choice of Game Review

:)

I was pleasantly surprised to see a relatively new game review in last weeks issue of MicroMart for a change. MMO is not my thing up to now but who knows, especially subscription based.

More current reviews of recent titles are better because older titles have already had adequate exposure in the usual media and most gamers have by then gained an impression and anyone can log onto Gamefaqs/Gamespot for a full run down.

Some of your earlier choices puzzled me because not only were they long in the tooth, but the choice of title, especially when the quality of the game itself was also poorly implemented and the question begs -Why Bother?

I find the best place for a laugh at the expense of a game turkey is Eurogamer's website where they have some very droll writers who can can make some very entertaining comments on poor gameplay.

Honest appraisals are now more important than ever as more and more "developers" from obscure areas some with little real skill, jump on the bandwagon in search of the elusive next big thing and come a tumble instead, for every one decent game, there are hundreds of average and lots of pure waste of time and money crapolas.

PS Nothing against old games, keep a PC for just that purpose.

Regards Spritestomper

Error in Family Friendly PC article (Correction please)

Hi Simon,

Mark Lee, states 'On Research, I learned that playing (yes, 'playing', not copying) commercial DVDs is effectively not legal in Linux.'

Now I'm pretty sure that DVD Jon who cracked the encryption in order to play his retail bought DVD's on his own Linux PC, was not found guilty of any crime for doing that by the Law Courts, in Norway (an EEC Member country).

So Marks research might relate to some Non-EEC country, but as MM is sold predominately in the UK (part of the EEC). I think the comment requires correction.

It may not be legal in some countries, but there is no 'Linux law enforcement agency' saying it's not legal in Linux.

headphones buyers guide

I'm in the market for a headset and was very happy to turn to the review and find it continued over the pageculminating in the Razer product. I was hoping for the final push to pay the hundred quid for the Barracuda but all we got was an extract from the product website. There was no mention of the USB connection that is used only to provide power as they still connect using jack plugs! In fact this is the same for all the items reviewed except those that were so cheap a generalised review was given based on price; that is they're cheap so they will be quite poor. Actually Kevin Pocock states clearly that he regards them all in terms of how well they perform as earmuffs so we learn about these headphones not in terms of their sound quality but how well other people cant hear them! What kind of nonsense is that?

The new gaming feature is a good idea tho

UK Downloaders to get Banned -What a joke
People in the UK who go online and illegally download music and films may have their internet access cut under plans the government is considering.
A draft consultation Green Paper suggests internet service providers would be required to take action over users who access pirated material.
Under a "three strikes" rule they would receive an e-mail warning, suspension, and then termination of their contract.

Six million people a year are estimated to download files illegally in the UK.
Just what do they think they can do . This whole idea is just plane stupid and unworkable.

Again a goverment trying to talk about somthing they have little idea about or how impossable it will be to monitor even if bought in as law.
The BPI, the trade body that represents the UK record industry, said internet providers had "done little or nothing to address illegal downloading via their networks".
"This is the number one issue for the creative industries in the digital age, and the government's willingness to tackle it should be applauded," said BPI chief executive Geoff Taylor.
"Now is not the time for ISPs to hide behind bogus privacy arguments
Again another who has little understanding of what would be needed to monitor the 6 million odd downloaders to comply with such a daft idea.

For them to monitor all there users would need massive amounts of data storage and many many man hours to perform checks on a users data.

For them to have any hope in doing this would mean saving all data from every user of the net and then having a system to filter P2P packets.Even when this is done they then need to check of the packets are legal or illegal as massive data transfer does not go hand in hand with illeagl P2P filesharing as there are many legal resons for massive bandwidth usage and more legal systems coming online all the time.

I don t know how many man hours would be needed to inspect 6 million users data packets to then get a result of illeagl download activity but it's more then any ISP would and willing to payfor.

There are already systems in place and used by some such as codemasters where they hire a company to Mine for users IP's on P2P networks and then goto there ISP's to get users details to then send a nasty letter asking for £500 a time -PMSL so far only 40% have bothered to pay the other 60% have yet to be taken to court and unlikly to be due to the fact no evidance can be provided and what they do have has yet to be tested and the company in question has already meet with ruling in other counrty's which did not go there way and have also been asked to cease there activities due to privicy questions and EU law.

The other thing about this green paper is it also sends out another hidden message that downloading is still a very grey area and still wont be crimilized. There is no new laws going to be created to make it illegal as they want ISP's to do the monitoring and the banning of users and no mention of court cases or action being taken from the old bill.

It gives the impression of a slapped wrist you been a naughter boy now go away and dont do it again -LOL

As a tracker owner myself i have access to users email address and always have a laugh at just how many .gov.uk address we get join.

I wonder just how many goverment works sites like mine do have ???

We already know of some users who work in the police force and other such things and even have a few solicitors as well ???

Remember %'s go for everyone and if 40% of the ineternet users in the UK are doing somin you can bet there are 40% of the police and judges and others will be part of that.

We have many users who are at home 24/7 due to no job ,looking after ill members of family or other reasons which all lead to them having less money to spend on such things as games app's movies ect ect

They are not losing the film or software industry anything as they would not be buying there products anyway due to not having the funds to do so.

Others have time restrictions and cant or dont want to have to go to the cinama and sit amoung a large group of yob's to see the lastest film's this is due to family commitents or other such factors.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

i could go on and on but time to go

free gift on subscription

i thought i was due to receive a free gift when i subscribed a while ago. this was about 2 months or so ago but i haven't received anything. i definately subscribed for the magazine and not the gift but that isn't the point.

i know my refernce number but dont want to post it. is it alright if i PM you with it?

Detecting System Failure (article from issue 992)

I meant to say this earlier but didn't get aroound to it until now.

In the article, which I think was pretty badly written, unlike usual from Louis...anyway I quote:

'...if you want to test your memory on a regular basis ... it's worth looking into a few of the free memory test utilities that are available to download.'

NOTE: At this point I would have expected either the names or links to some of the free utilities or, at least, a box out with these free utilities listed. Alas...we are treated to a mention of just one of the 'MANY free utilities'..and it goes on..

'My favourite one is a DOS based utility called Memtest, but requires you to have a floppy drive, or the facility to boot from a USB flash disk..'

Why?
What I mean to say is why bother to only mention one of the many utilities that has such limitations??? Not so long ago this very magazine was commenting on the loss of the floppy drive and we all know how many of our PCs no longer have one. Plus not everyone has or can boot from a USB drive so I just wonder why on earth this was the only one mentioned??!!

There is a similar utility called memtest86 which can be written to a cd and then booted from to then do the same type of task, test the RAM.

I just think there was a lack of consideration given in the article, especially for those who really were taking the article at face value (those who know next to nothing about it and so read it with a lot of trust!).

Maybe a future issue or article could include other free utilities for tasks like those mentioned. It is pretty pointless to say my favourite program is..and then give one that isn't going to be of use to so many people.

Anyway...I feel better now :)

Look here:

Net capacity

Fascinating article on the future of the net. That "dark fibre" is it being used or is just lying there doing nothing?

Micro Mart 2, Toms Hardware 0.

I dont Adam and Eve it.
