The worst offendors are the programs that load themselves on start-up. Check them off on Msconfig.

Services must be set to manual via services.msc, msconfig disables them totally and if the system needs it, can't start it.

However, disabling services doesn't improve start-up times a huge amount. The time vs benefit, is minimal. However, feel free to try. It's always fun to play with things :)

i was wondering if anyone can point me in the direction of a good, comprehensive list of start-up processes and what they do and whether it is wise to stop them.
