Hi John,

It seems that many are having problems with AVG8 Free and I was hoping that this thread might have been the answer - it wasn't to me unfortunately.

I have downloaded the Rising AVG some months ago but at the time AVG worked OK. I think I'll be following you.

I saw this thread http://forum.micromart.co.uk/Topic295939-5-1.aspx and ditched AVG in favour of the suggestion. I have never looked back, I had to install adaware 2008 as Rising AV doesn't seem to do adaware searches but is brill AV (free).

Tried it and it didn't work for me I'm sorry to say - re-booted and back to "Update Manager Disabled". Think I'll look for another AV prog.

AVG8 FREE Automated Update Problems.

Any one having probs with the auto updates on the new AVG 8. I have, over the last couple of weeks had on every boot-up had a red asterisk on the AVG icon on the Taskbar, when I have gone into AVG control panel, I have found that the Automated Updates were Disabled. I did what any normal person would do and tick the Start Automated Updates, close the control panel, safe in the knowledge that the updateds would now not be missed. Only to find that on the next boot-up, it would be disabled again and again. And again. Well not any more, after a quick Gooooogle search, I found this solution. Delete the sched.cfg file from AVG, then go into the AVG console, tick the Start Automated Updates. Update AVG, then reboot the system. All is now as it should be. :cool:

Here is where to find the AVG sched.cfg file on Windows XP & Vista.

XP : c:\documents and settings\all users\application data\avg8\cfg

Vista : C:\ProgramData\avg8\Cfg\sched.cfg

I take no credit for this fix, I aint that GOOD. I am just passing on the info..........
